APrimal Hunger

My feet pounded against the earth, blood pumping through my veins as I ran as fast as I could. “Don’t stop running!” Ronan’s voice rang behind me. “I’ll protect you as much as I can!” I didn’t dare look back. Fear clawed at my chest, my breaths growing ragged with each step. The distant thrum from the condo could still be heard, its rhythm matching my frantic heartbeat. Then I heard it--The unmistakable sound of bones snapping, followed by vicious snarls and growls. Dread tightened in my gut. I risked a glance back, and could see Ronan, his large paws slamming into the earth as he took on his wolf form. Then I saw them. Wolves charging toward us with savage intent. They were going to kill me. My desperation to survive pushed me faster and deeper into the woods, branches ripping at my flesh as I dodged the trees in my path. My muscles burned, cold sweat slicking my skin as the darkness and forest grew thicker. A sudden heavy thud coming from behind me startled me. I turned to see Ronan pinned to the ground by another wolf, their teeth and claws clashing as they fought each other. My pulse spiked as I rushed towards him to help, not sure what I could even do to help the situation. His eyes met mine, sending me a single command. Run. Feeling like my heart had been ripped out of my chest, I turned on my heels and ran ahead, a lump forming in my throat as I left him. I was alone now. Tears burned through my eyes as I pushed through the cypresses. I never asked wanted this life, never wanted things to be like this. I thought of all I’d lost-- my parents, Iris. A sudden sharp pain pierced through my skull, disorienting me as I staggered on my feet. I clutched my head, wincing as I fought through the agony. Then, as suddenly as it came, the pain dulled. I regained my balance and kept running. A movement to my side caught my eye. I turned just in time to see a large wolf, its eyes glinting menacingly. My breath hitched as panic clawed at my chest. My instincts took over, and I pushed my limbs to my limit, pushing forward with every ounce of speed and strength I could muster. The wolf suddenly lunged at me, soaring through the air with its fangs bared. I ducked immediately, my body slamming into the ground as I rolled. The wolf crashed into a tree, with a loud thud. Satisfaction surged through me. I could do this. I could survive. There was still no sign of Ronan, and I said a mental prayer, hoping he was okay. I refocused, pushing through the woods. That’s when I felt it. Their presence. It was suffocating, wrapping around me like chains. A shudder rippled through my body as every hair on my body stood on end. I lost focus and made the mistake of looking back. There they were, their ebony fur gleaming under the moonlight’s glow as they tailed on me. They moved fast and deathly silent, their precision that of an apex predator. And I was their prey. Adrenaline pumped through my veins, like it’d been waiting for this moment to push me past my limits. My legs propelled me forward in desperation, as I ran harder and faster than I’d ever run in my life. That’s when the pain came. The pain in my skull came like a blade, sharp and searing. A guttural scream ripped from my throat as I clutched my head. My legs buckled beneath me, and I fell to the ground. My body convulsed as violent spasms raked through me. It felt like dying, my mind unraveling as I was driven to insanity. My screams echoed through the woods, swallowed by the surrounding darkness. Images flashed through my mind. Blood on concrete. Iris’s body. The gravestone. “Make it s-stop!” I cried out, rolling on the floor. My nails dug into my head as if that would take the pain away. But it was futile. The agony was unbearable. A wolf suddenly struck. Hot pain tore through my shoulder as it bit me. Blood splattered around me-- my blood. I thrashed, but the wolf was vicious and relentless, its jaw snapping at me. I screamed in pain, as I tried to fight the wolf and the agonizing pain in my skull. Suddenly, a burst of energy erupted within me as I shoved the wolf. I watched in shock as it was thrown off me, landing on the ground with a painful thud. The pain in my head suddenly dulled, then it struck my teeth. I clenched my jaw as I gritted my teeth. I sprang tomy feet, my legs quaking beneath me as I held my jaw. What the hell was happening to me? The wolf I’d pushed earlier shifted back into their human and charged at me. I recognized her immediately. Raven. I dodged her attack and she almost fell to the ground. She turned back to me. “You b***h!” She shrieked, as she wrapped her hands around my throat, her nails biting into my skin.“I’m so going to kill you!” “Get off me!” my voice came out mumbled due to the pain in my jaw, as I clawed at her hands wrapped around my throat. Suddenly, something shifted inside me and I gasped at the rush of energy. Red clouded my vision. Where my hands touched her, I could hear her blood rushing beneath her skin. I could see her veins pulsing. My eardrums pulsed as I heard her erratic beating heart. My nostrils twitched as a sweet metallic scent filled my lungs. Blood. My mouth instantly started to salivate, as I glared at Raven. What was happening to me? A primal hunger coiled in my gut. Before I could think, I yanked her wrist and brought it to my lips, and then, I bit her. She screamed as I sucked on her blood. The taste of her blood flooded my mouth. Sweet and addictive. “You freakl! What the hell are you doing to me?” she screeched, grating my sensitive ears. Annoyance coiled through me as I glared. It felt like something had possessed me. I wasn’t in control anymore and I didn’t fight it. I bared my teeth, ready to sink them into her wrist again when I was suddenly yanked back with force. Thevron. He shoved Raven away, his sharp tone cutting through the haze in my mind. “Get back to the condo. Now.” Raven bolted without hesitation. When he turned back at me, his gaze sent chills down my spine. My instinct screamed at me to run. I spun, ready to bolt, only for me to slam into a solid body. Zavian. His strong arms locked around me, keeping me back caged against his chest. Someone grasped my chin, forcing my gaze to him. Kairon. Anger and panic surged through me as I struggled against their grip. “You’ve played your stupid game! Now let me go!” I spat, but my voice was different. It was sharper. That’s when I felt her. My wolf. My soul fused with hers, leaving a burning sensation in my heart. A voice, raw and primal, echoed in my head. Mate! My eyes widened in horror. I turned to them, seeing the same stunned look on their faces. “No,” Zavian breathed behind me. “This can’t be right.” “How could all three of us be mated to her? I don’t understand,” was Kairon’s confused response. For the first time, Thevron looked shaken. Kairon’s fingers dug into my cheek painfully, forcing my mouth open. Thevron moved closer, and yanked my lips to reveal my teeth. His body stiffened as his jaw clenched. When he spoke, his voice was low and chilling. “What are you?” I wish I knew.
