The crystal chandelier above the ballroom scattered golden light across polished marble floors, reflecting off champagne glasses and designer gowns. Conversations drifted through the room, punctuated by laughter and the soft melody of a live string quartet.
Ava Bennett stood near the entrance, clutching her event planner’s tablet so tightly her knuckles had turned white.
This wasn’t just another event.
It was the event.
The annual Blake Capital Investors’ Gala.
If tonight went well, her small event-planning company would finally earn the reputation it desperately needed. One successful evening could mean more clients, more contracts, and enough money to keep her business alive.
She took a deep breath.
“You can do this.”
Her assistant hurried toward her, panic written all over her face.
“Ava…”
Ava frowned.
“What happened?”
“The keynote speaker’s flight was delayed.”
“What?”
“He won’t make it for another two hours.”
Ava closed her eyes for exactly three seconds before reopening them.
“Fine. We’ll move the charity auction forward and switch the order of the program.”
Her assistant blinked.
“You figured that out already?”
“We don’t have time to panic.”
She was already walking toward the stage.
Everything was under control.
Until it wasn’t.
A waiter brushed past her.
Someone called her name.
She turned.
At the exact same moment another figure stepped out of a private hallway.
Their shoulders collided.
Hard.
The tablet slipped from Ava’s hands.
Coffee flew through the air in slow motion.
Straight onto the immaculate charcoal suit of the man she’d just crashed into.
The ballroom fell silent.
Ava stared.
The stranger looked down at the dark stain spreading across his expensive jacket.
Then he slowly lifted his gaze.
Steel-gray eyes met hers.
Cold.
Unreadable.
Dangerously calm.
He wasn’t shouting.
He wasn’t angry.
Which somehow felt much worse.
“I’m…”
She swallowed.
“…so sorry.”
The man didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he accepted a handkerchief from his assistant and calmly wiped a drop of coffee from his watch.
An extremely expensive watch.
One that probably cost more than her entire apartment.
“You should watch where you’re going,” he said evenly.
Ava’s embarrassment flared into irritation.
“I was working.”
“So was I.”
She folded her arms.
“And you were walking out of a restricted hallway without looking.”
A faint murmur rippled through the guests.
Her assistant looked ready to faint.
The man tilted his head, studying her as though she’d just become unexpectedly interesting.
“Do you always argue after ruining someone’s evening?”
“Only when they’re equally responsible.”
For the first time…
The corner of his mouth almost lifted.
Almost.
Before disappearing again.
One of the board members rushed over.
“Mr. Blake, everyone is waiting.”
Ava froze.
Mr. Blake?
Her stomach dropped.
No.
No, no, no…
There was only one Blake everyone at this event feared.
Ethan Blake.
Founder and CEO of Blake Capital.
The billionaire hosting tonight’s gala.
The man she’d just drenched in coffee.
Wonderful.
Simply wonderful.
Ethan looked at her one last time.
“Enjoy the rest of your evening, Miss…”
“Ava.”
“Ava.”
He spoke her name as though committing it to memory.
Then he walked away.
The crowd parted for him without a word.
Only after he disappeared into the ballroom did Ava finally exhale.
Her assistant slowly turned toward her.
“You spilled coffee…”
“I know.”
“…on Ethan Blake.”
“I know.”
“…the billionaire who hired us.”
Ava buried her face in her hands.
“I know.”
Somewhere across the ballroom, Ethan adjusted his cufflinks before glancing back toward the entrance.
His assistant frowned.
“Should I have security escort her out?”
Ethan’s eyes lingered on the stubborn woman who was already reorganizing the event as though nothing had happened.
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“Let her stay.”
He didn’t know why.
But something told him this wouldn’t be the last time Ava Bennett turned his perfectly ordered world upside down.
