Chapter 2

I reach the gym just as the sun rises and head straight to the punching bags. Dropping my bag to the floor, I begin to throw punches finally letting out some of the rage I have bottled up inside of me. With each punch I see Zander and Chloe, laying on the floor, in a puddle of their own blood. It was all my fault. The masked man was right. I could have saved at least one of them, I could have even saved both somehow but I was too selfish. Their deaths are on my head. I don't know how long I stand there punching the bag for but I keep going despite to searing pain in my hands from my freshly cracked and bleeding knuckles. "Woah, are you okay?" A voice to my left says, breaking me from my trance. "What's it to you?" I say, turning to face the voice. A young guy stands in front of me, he looks about twenty-five. He is lean and yet muscular, with blond spiked hair. As I study him I notice that he has a wolf tattoo on his left shoulder. "Well for one you are making the punching bag all bloody and I was going to use it after you," he says with a raised eyebrows and a slight smirk on his face, I look back and see what he means. My blood is smeared over the bag and dripping down it slowly. I stare at the blood, this isn't the first time that I have left a bag looking like this and I know it won't be the last but I hate when I lose control like this, when I let my past consume me, when I let HIM have control of me. "And two you look like you might pass out," He continues, "so again are you okay?" His voice distracts me from my wandering thoughts, tearing my eyes away from the bag I look back at him and give a small nod and quickly give the bag a clean, then I rush to pack my stuff and leave. I leave the gym and begin to run, but a few moments into my run home I hear footsteps behind me and they are coming fast. "Hey!" I hear from behind, stopping dead in my tracks I brace myself for an attack. The footsteps start to slow and as they come closer I ball my hand up into a fist, when the footsteps stop right behind me I do a fast turn with my right fist swinging. But before my fist can connect with the persons jaw, the boy guy with wolf tattoo blocks it. "Woah, easy princess!" The shock is clear in his voice. He rubs his forearm where he blocked my punch, "damn you have a good arm, no wonder you were able to do that to your hands." His eyes drop to my blood stained hands, then he continues, "You dropped this at the gym and it looked kind of important." He hands me my locket, the only thing left from my father. I open the locket and look at the photographs of my parents, and turn the locket over in my hands examining it as of for the first time. "Thank you for giving it back to me, not everyone one would have done that," I give him a small but kind smile, "oh and sorry for taking a swing at you." He laughs, "It wouldn't be the first time and it definitely won't be the last." I laugh softly in response. His eyes travel from my face down to my injured hands, "You should really let a doctor take a look at your hands." "I'll be fine. It was nice meeting you..." "Caden. Caden Wright." He helps "Caden, but I should really get going. Thank you again." I say putting the necklace on as I turn around. I start to run, and I can hear Caden call something out but I can't hear him, but that doesn't matter so I keep running. The streets fly by as I keep running, pushing myself to run faster and faster. After thirty minutes of running I arrive home, my legs are cramping and I'm struggling to get a breath. I rummage around in my gym bag trying to find my keys, as I make my way to the door – only to find it unlock. 'That's strange, the house is never unlocked.' I think to myself. The worst case scenario pops into my head but I push that aside for now, and take out my gun out of my bag. I switch the safety off and walk in gun first. The house is trashed, pictures are smashed on the floor, our lamps are broken on the floor. What the heck happened here? Where is Trey? My heart starts to race, as I move slowly through the living room I swing my gun from right to left. I feel an ache in my chest as I continue looking for Trey and checking for anything that shows that people are still in the house. I use the same technique through out the rest of the house, looking everywhere for signs that people are still here. I've gone through almost the entire house, it has all been the same, everything that Trey and I had is now destroyed. I notice a faint smell of paint but I ignore it for now. As I come to the last hallway, the one right outside my bedroom, I hear a creak in the floor boards and snap my gun around the corner, pointing it at the intruders head. "Please, don't shoot!" That's Trey's voice. I can see his silhouette step out of the hallway. "Damn it Trey! What the hell were you thinking? I thought someone was in the house! I could have killed you." I drop my gun to my side, and let out a breath I didn't realise I was holding. Trey takes a few unsteady steps forward so that I can see him, "someone was in the house." His hat covers most of his face but when he looks up I can see that his face is beaten and bloody, his shirt is ripped and stained with blood and he is holding his left arm with one hand, he tries to take another step forward but instead falls to his knees. "Trey!" I rush forward, half catching him, "who the hell did this to you?" He gasps as I grab his arm so steady him, his breaths come out fast and haggard, "I don't know who they were, but they were looking for something and they said to give you a message; 'Your father promised us a file, give it to us or else.'" So many questions go through my head; who did all of this? What file are they talking about? Why do they think I have this mystery file? "Em, what file are they talking about? And what do they mean by or else? Does that mean they are coming back!?" He panics. "I don't know! Okay, I don't know." I can tell trey wants to ask me more questions but he remains silent, my mind has gone completely blank, I can't think straight. My eyes fall from Trey's face to his arm, and slowly I peel his hand off the fresh wound. A gasp escapes my mouth as I see that it isn't just a wound, someone has carved letters into his arm: B.W Black Wolves. One of the most feared gangs in all of Australia. I need to get out of here, I can't stay here any longer. The narrow hallway starts to feel like it is closing in on me and my thoughts begin to take over. This is all your fault. They were here looking for you. You hurt someone else, congratulations. "I need to get out of here." I blurt out and push myself to my feet, sprinting behind Trey to my room to pack up my stuff. Once I get there I slam the door shut and spin so I am facing my bed and grab hold of a bunch of my hair. I let out a scream that I have been holding in for what feels like a lifetime and I punch the wall with my busted knuckles, opening up the cracks again causing them to bleed. That's it, I have to get as far from this place as possible. Packing doesn't take me long but all I can think about is that message. Why would my father promise the Black Wolves a file, and what was the file? Lost in my own train of thought I don't even take my surroundings properly. My room has been completely ransacked, just like the rest of the house, I start throwing the clothes that are on my bed into a bag along with a spare 9mm and a dozen mags for it. I spin around to grab a photo of Zander from the shelf behind me- Out of shock I let out a shriek and drop the photograph. No it can't be! He is dead! Written on the back of the door, in what looks like blood is yet another message for me. Come back and play, babydoll xx He was here! The masked man was here in my house; in my room! My throat tightens and I feel like I can't breathe. I collapse to the floor in a heap, shaking as my hand runs over the scar on my inner thigh. My kidnapper, my torturer is back. I have to get out of here. But I can't leave Trey here, if the Black Wolves come back they'll kill him for sure, and if the masked man appears he will torture him until he finds out where I am. I hastily pull myself up off the floor, grab my bag and run out into the hall where Trey still sits, but is now hugging his knees on the floor. "Pack a bag, we are leaving." "But I-" "NOW!" He gets to his feet and staggers off toward his room, wincing in pain as he goes, and I sprint into the kitchen to get the first aid stuff before we leave.
