We aren’t the only ones dreaming of rebellion. Tom’s friend, Jake, had been part of the Irish upstart at Vinegar Hill. Their efforts to take Ireland back from English rule had fallen and he was sentenced to this purgatory far from home and, the Brits believed, out of mind. But the spark inside Jake still burns hot and ever since his arrival two months ’fore ours, he be making plans to set up his own kingdom in the new land. Tom is busy working behind the scenes, setting up Jake’s plans and goading the men to follow. All this is whispered down the rows in the fields and in the evenings after the work is done.
