Chapter 4: Playing with Fire

640 Words
By 2:00 AM, the Manhattan skyline through the glass walls of Conference Room B had settled into a silent array of scattered lights. Maya stretched her arms above her head, wincing slightly as her shoulders popped. The table between them was covered in highlighted spreadsheets, empty espresso cups, and printed SEC filings. Across from her, Julian had discarded his suit jacket onto the back of a chair, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing lean, corded forearms. "Look at column four," Maya said, her voice slightly raspy from hours of intense debate. She tapped a fingernail against the physical draft in front of him. "If we adjust the tax liability based on the European subsidiaries, the entire EBITDA ratio shifts in our favor." Julian leaned closer over the desk, pulling the paper toward himself. In doing so, his knuckles brushed against hers. Neither of them pulled away immediately. Maya felt a sudden spike in her pulse—a sharp, dizzying reminder of how close he was. Under the dim overhead spotlights, she could see the golden flecks in his dark eyes and the faint shadow of stubble along his jawline. Julian’s gaze shifted from the paper up to her face, tracking the line of her throat down to the open top button of her silk blouse. The intense corporate focus in his eyes melted into something far darker, far more dangerous. "You're relentless, Maya," he said softly, his voice a low rumble in the quiet room. "I have to be," she replied, keeping her voice steady despite the sudden heat rising beneath her skin. "I don't have a family name to protect me if a deal falls apart. I only have my work." Julian’s expression softened slightly, a rare crack appearing in his confident composure. "You think I rely on my name?" "I think your name gets you in doors I have to break down," Maya said quietly, looking directly into his eyes. Julian stared at her for a long moment, then slowly stood up from his seat. He walked around the edge of the conference table until he was standing beside her chair. Resting one hand on the back of her seat and the other on the table, he effectively boxed her in. "Then let me make one thing clear, Lin," Julian murmured, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. The scent of cedar and warm skin was overwhelming. "I don't want this deal because of my father. And I don't want to beat you because you're my competitor." Maya held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a caged bird. "Then why?" "Because you're the only person in this entire building who actually keeps up with me," he whispered, his eyes dipping down to her lips before meeting her gaze again. "And it's driving me insane." Maya’s lips parted slightly, a surge of pure, electric friction passing between them. For a terrifying, exhilarating second, she thought he was going to lean down and kiss her. Then, the sudden electronic chirp of her phone on the desk broke the silence. Maya blinked, pulling back slightly as Julian straightened up, running a hand through his hair with a quiet exhale. She reached for her phone, her fingers slightly trembling. "It's... it's an email from the board. They've moved the preliminary presentation up to 9:00 AM." Julian picked up his suit jacket, tossing it over his shoulder with a sharp, familiar smirk returning to his features—though his eyes remained dark and intent. "Then I guess we have six hours to finish this," Julian said, his tone casual once more, though the air between them still practically crackled. "Get some coffee, Lin. We're just getting started.
