The Keeper of Lost Futures

592 Words
Lillian's breath came in quick, shallow gasps as she stood in the dimly lit chamber, her fingers clenched around Ezra's wrist. The air was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something metallic, like time itself was bleeding through the cracks of the universe. The walls trembled, as if the room were caught between two existences, shifting like the tide. A ripple of energy swept through the space, and then, emerging from the darkness, a woman stepped forward. She was tall, draped in an emerald robe adorned with symbols that pulsed like living ink. Her silver eyes held an unnatural glow, her gaze piercing through Lillian as if she could see every version of her that had ever existed. "You've come far," the woman said, her voice smooth and unsettlingly familiar. Lillian swallowed. "Who are you?" A small smile tugged at the woman's lips. "I am Selene. The Keeper of Lost Futures." Ezra's body went rigid beside Lillian. "She's dangerous," he muttered, his grip on Lillian's hand tightening. "Don't listen to her." Selene let out a soft laugh, tilting her head. "Oh, Ezra," she murmured, amusement flickering in her gaze. "Still clinging to the same lie, are we?" Lillian frowned. "What lie?" Selene didn't answer immediately. Instead, with a flick of her wrist, the room changed. The walls dissolved into swirling images—dozens, maybe hundreds, of different versions of Lillian and Ezra, frozen in time. Some were embracing, their expressions tender. Others were turning away from each other, pain evident in their eyes. One version of Lillian stood alone beneath a rain-soaked sky, staring at an empty street as if waiting for someone who would never come. "These are the futures you have lost," Selene said, gesturing toward the shifting images. "The choices you made, the paths you turned away from. And this—" she motioned to the present space, the crumbling reality around them "—is the prison you have built for yourself." Lillian's stomach twisted. "A prison?" Selene's eyes softened. "You are caught in a cycle, my dear. Time bends around your love, over and over again, repeating itself endlessly. And do you know why?" Lillian turned to Ezra, her heart pounding. "Ezra, what is she talking about?" Ezra's jaw tightened. "It doesn't matter." Selene raised an eyebrow. "Doesn't it?" She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You've kept her here, Ezra. In this endless loop. You've rewritten the story each time, changed little details, altered small moments, hoping that maybe—just maybe—this time, it would end differently." Lillian's breath hitched. "Ezra... is that true?" Ezra hesitated. Then, in a quiet, broken voice, he admitted, "Yes." The word shattered something inside her. "Why?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. Ezra's hands trembled at his sides. "Because I love you." Selene sighed. "Love is not a cage, Ezra. You cannot keep her in a story that keeps repeating." She turned back to Lillian, her silver eyes gleaming. "But you have a choice." She extended her hand. "Come with me, and I will show you the one path where you are truly free." Lillian looked between them—Ezra, the man she had loved through lifetimes, and Selene, the enigmatic stranger offering her a way out. The weight of every choice, every lost future, pressed against her chest like an iron weight. Ezra's voice was raw. "Lillian, please." Selene's voice was steady. "Lillian, decide." The room trembled, time itself waiting for her answer. And then— She took a step forward.
