The Fractured Choice

560 Words
Ezra sat at the edge of the rooftop, his hands gripping the ledge as he stared at the city lights. The weight of realization pressed against him like a tidal wave. Lillian stood a few feet away, her voice barely above a whisper. "Ezra, I—" He exhaled sharply, cutting her off. "Just tell me the truth, Lillian. No more half-truths, no more riddles. Did you know all along?" She hesitated, her fingers tightening around the silver locket hanging from her neck. "I didn't want to believe it." Ezra turned, his hazel eyes dark with something she couldn't quite place. "That's not an answer." Cassius, standing in the shadows, smirked. "Oh, but it is, dear Ezra. She knew. She played her role well, didn't she?" Lillian glared at him. "I didn't play anything! I just—I wanted to fix us." Ezra scoffed, shaking his head. "Fix us? Lillian, you've been rewriting the story without telling me. You made me fall in love with you again, and I didn't even know I was repeating history." A new voice interrupted them. "And yet, wasn't it always meant to happen this way?" A woman stepped out from the shadows—a stranger with piercing blue eyes and an air of authority. Her presence sent a ripple through the air, distorting the space around them. Lillian's breath caught. "Who are you?" The woman's lips curved into a knowing smile. "I go by many names. But for now, call me Celeste." Cassius narrowed his eyes. "You shouldn't be here." Celeste chuckled. "Neither should you. But here we are." Ezra stood up, his gaze flickering between them. "What is this? Another game? Another piece of the puzzle I don't get to see?" Celeste turned to him, her expression softening. "No games. Just the truth you've been seeking." She stepped closer. "Ezra, you weren't supposed to remember." Lillian's pulse quickened. "What?" Celeste continued, "You were meant to forget, to live freely. The loop wasn't just about Lillian—it was about you, too." Ezra clenched his fists. "Then why do I remember now?" Cassius smirked. "Because she broke the rules." Lillian's heart pounded. "I—" Celeste tilted her head. "She chose love over fate. And in doing so, she unraveled the fabric of what was meant to be." Ezra's voice was raw. "Then what happens now?" Celeste exhaled, glancing at Cassius. "That depends." Lillian's throat was dry. "On what?" Cassius grinned. "On whether you're willing to make the ultimate choice." Ezra's chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. "Which is?" Celeste met his gaze, her voice gentle but firm. "Erase your memories once more, go back to the timeline where you never knew Lillian... or fight against time itself and risk breaking reality." Silence hung thick between them. Lillian reached for Ezra's hand, her fingers trembling. "Ezra..." He swallowed hard, his mind spinning. "If I choose to forget... will I ever find my way back to you?" Cassius laughed. "Who's to say you ever truly did?" Celeste held Ezra's gaze. "Love doesn't always follow the rules of time. But sometimes, the only way to save it... is to let it go." Lillian's eyes filled with tears. "Ezra, don't—" He closed his eyes, breathing deeply. "I have to make a choice." And as the clock tower struck midnight, time waited for his answer.
