The Shattered Timeline

473 Words
The moment Lillian made her choice, the air around her cracked like glass. A deafening silence fell over the room, the swirling images in the air freezing in place before shattering into shimmering fragments. Ezra reached for her, but his fingers slipped through her wrist as if she were already dissolving into time itself. "Lillian, no!" His voice was raw, filled with desperation. "Don't let him take you!" Cassius, still holding the golden pocket watch, merely smirked. "She made her choice, Ezra. Time obeys those who dare to break it." Lillian felt an overwhelming force pulling her backward, as though the universe itself was unraveling her existence. She gasped, trying to hold onto something—anything—but the world blurred around her, colors bleeding into one another. And then, suddenly, everything went dark. She awoke in a familiar place. The scent of coffee. The faint hum of an old radio playing a jazz tune. A soft breeze rustling through an open window. Lillian's eyes fluttered open, her breath catching as she recognized the scene. She was in his apartment. Her heart pounded as she turned, expecting to see Ezra standing there, but instead, she found someone else. A woman. Selene. But this Selene looked different—softer, younger, almost uncertain. "You're awake," Selene murmured, setting down a steaming cup of tea. "I wasn't sure if you'd remember me yet." Lillian sat up too quickly, her head spinning. "What—what happened? Where's Ezra?" Selene sighed. "We're in a timeline where he never met you." Lillian's blood ran cold. "That's not possible. Ezra and I—" "Were never supposed to meet," Selene interrupted gently. "Not in this version of time." A pit formed in Lillian's stomach. "Then why am I here?" Cassius's voice echoed behind her. "Because love bends time. And yours refuses to be erased." Lillian turned sharply to find Cassius leaning against the doorway, his golden eyes gleaming with amusement. "You're still playing games," she snapped. "What did you do?" "I merely gave you what you asked for," Cassius said smoothly. "A reset. A chance to break free from the cycle." Lillian shook her head. "But this—this isn't freedom. This is erasure." Selene stepped forward. "Not quite. You still have a choice. But this time, it's one you have to make without Ezra's influence." Lillian swallowed hard. "And if I want him back?" Cassius chuckled darkly. "Then you'll have to make him fall in love with you again—without the weight of time tipping the scales." Lillian felt her heartbeat thunder in her chest. A world where Ezra didn't know her. A chance to rewrite fate from scratch. But was love truly enough to defy time itself? Cassius tilted his head. "Your move, darling." Lillian took a deep breath and stepped forward—ready to begin again.
