Ava's head spun as she sat up, Kaden's hand steady on her back. They were in a dimly lit room, the air thick with the scent of old books and wood smoke. A soft glow emanated from candles, casting shadows on the walls.
"Where...where are we?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kaden's eyes were intense, like he was searching for something. "My home. You're safe here."
Ava's mind reeled. Safe? What did that mean? She pushed off the soft cushions, her feet finding solid ground. The room was small, intimate, with books lining the shelves. A desk in the corner, papers scattered, a quill pen poised mid-air.
Kaden's eyes followed hers. "My study. I've been searching for you, Lia."
Ava's heart skipped. "My name's Ava."
Kaden's smile was gentle. "Ava. It's a variant of Lia. Our families...they named us after each other."
Ava's skin pricked. "What do you mean?"
Kaden's eyes dropped, his voice low. "Our ancestors, they were promised to each other. The necklaces, they're more than just symbols. They're binding."
Ava's fingers touched the pendant, her mind spinning. Binding? What kind of binding?
The door creaked open, a figure silhouetted in the doorway. "Kaden, we need to talk."
Kaden's jaw cliked. "Ava, this is Elijah. My...advisor."
Elijah's eyes narrowed, taking in Ava. "The girl. She's...unexpected."
Ava's hackles rose. "I'm not just a girl. I'm Ava."
Elijah's smile was thin. "Ava, then. Kaden, we have problems. The Order's stirring. They know she's here."
Kaden's eyes flashed, his voice low and deadly. "We'll deal with the Order."
Ava's heart pounded. The Order? What was that? And what did they want with her?
Elijah's eyes lingered on Ava, a calculating gaze. "Kaden, are you sure this is wise?"
Kaden's hand on Ava's back was firm. "We're in this together. Ava, we'll figure this out. Together."
