LEXIE Tuesday was always slow at the drug store. I didn't know why. It wasn't a theory I had tested scientifically or anything, just something I had noticed over the weeks. I didn't mind. It gave me time to get the shelves properly sorted and have actual conversations with people instead of just processing them through the register. Mr. Harlan was in the back doing his accounts, which he did every Tuesday without fail, emerging occasionally for coffee and to tell me something needed restocking that I had already restocked. I had started anticipating his observations and fixing things before he came out, which seemed to both satisfy and slightly annoy him. I considered that a perfect outcome. The morning moved quietly.
