LEXIE NEXT MORNING I woke up and lay there for a moment, the room was bright, morning light coming clean through the curtains, the town outside already making its quiet early sounds. I stretched and looked at the ceiling and then i remembered, today was my birthday. Twenty seventh. I lay there with that for a second, not sad about it, not particularly excited either. Just aware of it the way you were aware of a date that used to mean something when there were people around who made it mean something. Balloons and dinner, that felt like someone else's life now. I got up, took a bath, pulled on clean jeans and my favourite top, the soft grey one that had survived the whole journey from my old life to this one without getting ruined, and looked at myself in the mirror. Twenty seven.
