LEXIE Thursday started with rain. I stood at my window for a minute with my coffee before work, watching it come down. *Of course it rains on a Thursday,* I thought. *Thursdays have always had questionable character.* The walk to the drug store was damp despite my jacket and I arrived with wet hair and shoes that squelched slightly on the clean floor. Mr. Harlan looked at me from behind the counter and then at the puddle forming at my feet. "It's raining," I said. "I can see that," he said. "Just making sure we're both aware of the situation." I shook my jacket out by the door and hung it on the hook. "Also good morning." He handed me a towel from under the counter without being asked. I took it, dried my face, and got to work.
