LEXIE NEXT DAY The afternoon shift at the drug store ended the same way it always did. Mr. Harlan grunted something that roughly translated to "good work" and disappeared into the back with his paperwork. I wiped down the counter, said goodbye to Mrs. Ellis who had come in for her usual pain cream and stayed an extra twenty minutes to tell me about her neighbor's cat, and walked out into the late afternoon sun.
