Marie had gone but yet I am still standing. At least I was now relieved a little. The rumbling and the heaviness I felt in my chest were no longer there. I couldn’t exactly tell if Marie had some unique abilities that cured anxieties. Maybe she had an ability that could heal sick people without even touching them, I thought. How she completely changed my mood was what I couldn’t still understand. I stood still reminiscing over what just transpired. Thinking about the warm embrace she gave me, the warmth from her nostril to my chest, the soft hands she placed on my back, and then how she rested her head on my chest. I also remembered when my jaw rested on her hair, I perceived the smell of her hair.
It smelt really nice.
A mixture of sweetness, fragrance, and the aromatic smell went in through my nose then to my head. Then there was this sudden desire to never let her go.
I loved every second of it. I loved it to a point that I wished she would hug me forever. Maybe I thought it would keep me away from worry. But like I said before, I knew it was wishful thinking, it was something I knew will never happen. Now everything was over, I needed to find where the water was leaking in the boat. If I find the hole, then I might be able to stop the ship from sinking, I thought.
Let me start with Brady first, I thought. He was the only one who I told about Valerie and nobody else. He was the only person I explained to what had happened and he was also the only one who I entrusted with the job of finding who her parents were. Since something had happened to Valerie, I knew that there must be some connection between her and possibly what I had told Brady about what went on, I thought. I squirmed my body hastily and headed straight to the brewery where I knew I would see who I was looking for—Brady. When I got there, I stood outside the place, perhaps waiting to see if Brady was going to come out like he did the other time. I waited and waited but yet there was no sign of him. In fact, there was no sign of anyone.
Where could they all gave gone to? Nobody had entered or left the place. I couldn’t wait any longer so I decided to walk inside the brewing house. Now I was inside, my eyes dazzled around looking and admiring. The floor of the house was perfectly tied with well-furnished brown logs harmoniously arranged side by side. It was a surprise to me that I had never been here even though it was very popular. That goes to show that there were lots of amazing places in Zahrin I was yet to discover. I could see the ceiling from the entrance door where I stood and it had a height of a storey building and half. The windows were almost close to the roof, Impossible for any human to jump through it or climb it without using a tall ladder. Light rays were thrown through the far windows and they landed on the floor in units of beams, illuminating the whole place. I wondered how dark the place would be in the middle of the night when the light would be weak to travel down from the frames to the floor. At the far sides of the massive room, which stretched to the full yards of the house without any interruption, there were many opened cupboards in front of the walls. Inside it was ceramic jars kept both sides by side and also placed on top of each other. Some broken jars were kept outside the cupboard, carefully placed to avoid littering the ground. It seemed like here was like a*****e or something where the jars for the wines are packed but what about where the brews are made?
I looked up, I saw a void with a veranda, large enough to contain twenty people. Then there was a wooden spiral staircase at both ends of the wall, very close to the cupboards leading to the void at the top. Now, I found the answer I had been looking for. That must be the place the brews were made, I thought. It was also possible that I was going to find Brady there. I had to climb one of the stairs, I preferred the right one. I got to the terrace and I opened the first door I saw. Then I saw another lobby that led someplace— Somewhere I don't know. I could see smoke billowing around the atmosphere in a haphazard motion. I could perceive the scent possibly coming from where the smoke was coming from. It was a smell of fine wine. Honestly, it was a satisfying scent, the type that would make your desire to start tasting the drinks. I could have followed the scent and see where it would lead me to but that would only have been possible if it was coming from a particular direction. I could hear the screeching sound of machines whirring and could also hear people exchanging conversations in what seemed to be a cluster of noises. I didn’t even try to listen because I knew it would be useless. The sound from the machinery I presumed wouldn’t even allow me to. I sojourned further from where I stood. There were like four doors in the hallway with two facing opposite each other while the other two faced each other at the far end of the lobby.
‘This should be someone’s office I said to myself. It was a courtesy call to knock before entry. While I was facing the door to my right, I heard a piercing sound from my back, it was as if someone opened a door. I turned immediately, I was anxious. The new me wouldn’t allow someone to come at my back without seeing what or who it was first.
At the door, a gangly young man emerged. He might be of the same age as me. His brown hair was fluffy and he wore a crisp black jacket with plain brown trousers.
“How can I help you?” he asked me, his voice was coarser than I thought it should be. He regarded me with a glance that seemed unfriendly.
“I am looking for someone who works here,” I told him. He looked at me again, accessing me. He leaned closer as if he wanted to smell my shirt. It was a good thing I was taller than him so there was no tendency that he would get me scared in case if that’s what he had in mind.
“Who you are looking for. . .” he paused and looked at me straight in the eyes. “Doesn’t the person you are looking for has a name?” he asked. He leaned even more closer.
Oh! I didn’t mention his name?
“His name is Brady.”
