***Anon's POV***
I shut open my eyes, I noticed morning had already set in— my window had always been my constant reminder. I was in my bed and I had just woken up from sleep. I had a dream and I think I remembered everything that happened in the dream. It might interest you to know that sometimes when I dream, I tend to forget some details when I wake up— but it was not so this time.
But it wasn't the case this time around. It was my first time seeing Marie in my dream. I began to ask myself a question, why would she appear in my world?
There, I saw Marie crying, and she also tried to console herself. But the next moment, I saw her smiling— her face beamed in absolute beauty even amid tears rolling down her cheek. She had this smile that gladdened my heart and made it flutter around like a young tadpole. I saw an affectionate, contagious, bright smile swept all over her face. Words can not express how happy I was to see that moment. I felt as though it wasn't a dream— It felt so real. I remembered touching her jaw, trying to comfort her. I felt like doing more than that to her at that moment. I just didn’t understand why I felt different when I was with her. Whenever I was with her, I don’t feel like I have control over my own body. Whenever I was with her, I feel like there’s some kind of connection between us. I feel like there is something in her that is drawing me closer to her— something I couldn’t resist. I had never felt this way before for any girl because. . . maybe because I was a very bad conservative type of person. I realized that if I continue to think about her, then the whole day might probably just waste away. So I had to get myself busy with something. Seeing Norman was a good start, I thought.
I stood up from my bed and did my normal morning routine. Took my bath. Handled my tooth. Found some good clothes and then put them on. I tried to keep what had happened to me at the back of my head. Not like I had totally forgotten that I would have been a dead man but I moved them to an archive in my brain because I wouldn’t want to be distracted. I had to focus my energy on something else and when I mean something else, I mean the future. I left my room and headed straight to Norman’s house.
“Anyone home?” I asked. I was at his door.
“Come on in.”
I gently pushed the door. I tried to take it easy. (maybe I was gentle with the push because I didn’t want to cause any problem like I did the other time) The door gracefully opened.
I saw Norman in his house preparing something— I guessed that he must be making tonics, he doesn't just leave making those alone. He shot me his fatherly look and a smile. “You have come. Please, do grab a seat.” He instructed. He was sitting just opposite the table he had kept his breakfast. I could see well-grilled two checked laps and some vegetables mixed with some kind of milk. The bottle in the other end contained honey and it looked fresh.
So he was planning to eat too?
I just smiled at him without uttering a word. I grabbed an armchair and made myself comfortable opposite him. I couldn’t afford to miss this food. Even if he didn’t ask me to join him, I was going to ask myself to do so. “You must have had a horrible night, I assume,” he said. Or was it guessed?
Horrible night? I had just experienced the opposite. “No sir. I had a pleasant night's sleep.” I smiled. I dressed the chair so my legs could fit under the dining table comfortably.
Norman looked at me with what seemed like a surprised gaze. “You did?” he asked.
“Yes. I did.”
“Hmm.” He snorted. “Please, join me.”
“Of course,” I said. I picked a spoon and knife. I began to dissect the meat first. Seriously, I didn't understand why I choose to eat the meat first. “You know why I am here, right?” I asked. I took in a large chunk of the chicken meat inside my mouth that obstructed some of my speech.
“I can take a guess.”
“You don’t need to,” I said. “I want to thank you for your help, sir. I really appreciate what you did for me. If not for you, I would have been a dead person by now.” I was still chewing on the meat.
He smiled but none of his teeth showed. “If not for the servant boy, I wouldn’t have known.”
“Yeah, right!”
“You remember what I told you the last time?” he asked.
I allowed the meat in my throat to settle down in my stomach before I could answer him. “Yes. I did.”
“This is just the tip of the iceberg, Anon. I don’t think you will be able to handle them when more of this will come.”
He had a point. But the thing is, I knew all these. “I know.”
“Then you need to have a plan. You need to strike before they strike. Attack before they defend. That’s the rule.”
I sighed. I relaxed my back in the armchair. “I know that too. It’s not like I don’t have plans, I do. But I just have to take things step by step. You know what I mean.”
He just nodded. “No matter the plans you have, it’s time you start implementing them. You really need to be fast, Anon. You don’t have much time.”
I think he was right. Whatever thing I had in mind to do, it was time I started doing them. Anyone dining with the devil should always use a long spoon. If you also wish to outpace your enemies, you need to do two things: start running before them and secondly, you need to run faster than them.
“I will keep that in mind,” I said. I sipped from the bottle of honey.
“Just remember that anytime you need help, just come to me. If it is something I can do, then I won’t hesitate to do it for you,” he said. “You remind me so much of your mother. She always loved you. She also made me swear that you will be safe so far as I am alive. I’m trying as much as I can to keep that promise, Anon. Please don’t make me break it.”
I just nodded but didn’t say any word. I knew I had to start making some arrangements. I had to start by signaling Brady’s brother to know how serious he was. Then if he wasn’t, I would make outside contact. I just needed to know how far the General had gone with the preparation. He was my last resort to HOPE.
I stood up from the chair. “I have to go now. Thanks for the food.” I bowed.
“There’s plenty of food still here. You don’t need to go now.”
“I wish I could stay much longer. But there’s something I need to take care of right now. I will always be back.”
“All right, son. Until you come again.”
I bowed and left.
