For some moment, Brady didn’t utter a word. I knew exactly what he could be thinking. He grinned, widening his chin. He gave me a monster look as we traded glances. In all honesty, I wouldn't even advise my best friend to share a top relationship secret with him. That could be the worst decision one could make.
“Ah hah! Don’t tell me you already kissed someone today? Was it that girl? Marie?” he gave me a crooked smile. I could spot his brows flickering in excitement. He seemed interested in the topic.
But Marie? Hell no!
Was there any way in the world I could convince Brady that I had nothing to do with the girl?
“No. Not about her. Please, I am not joking now Brad," I told him. "I just want you to give me a credible answer. Okay?”
He struggled not to smile. “That will not be a problem, my Prince,” he said and choked on a laugh.
“Must you end up with someone you had your first kiss with?” I asked.
"I don't get it," he said. "I don't understand your question, sir."
This time, I decided to ask it more directly. "Must you end up marrying the first girl you kissed?
He froze for a moment and then arched his brows. “What? That’s ridiculous. Where did you hear it from?”
“I have heard people saying it.” I lied.
Truly, I have never heard if there was anything like that anywhere. I just don’t know why I needed his opinion.
“Such thing doesn’t exist. Your first kiss mustn’t be your first love and your first love might not necessarily be the first person you kissed,” he said, gesturing with his hands.
To be honest, that was exactly what I wanted to hear. I found myself struggling to control a smile.
I was excited. The question had been bothering me but now, it seemed like I have the answer that I needed.
“That would be all for now.”
He didn’t ask any more questions. I thought he would honestly. He turned around and quietly walked away.
I went to my bed. I had to catch some sleep. I left my door slightly closed while I walked into my study room. I wanted to sleep there tonight, I thought. I felt it was safer since it had a separate door that linked it to my room. I had already kept a huge mattress on the floor, so I wouldn’t have to carry it around each time. I also had a special sword always hidden inside the room in case something happens unexpectedly— I wasn't praying for that anyway.
I lay on the mattress while I relaxed my head on my right hand. I tried to empty my thoughts so I could sleep as soon as possible. I only ended up starring at the ceiling, and still couldn't sleep. I closed my eyes most often thinking it would help but each time I tried that, I end up seeing Vera right inside my head. I noticed I had not been able to shake off the feeling I got after she had kissed me. I couldn’t still believe that on the first day I kissed a girl, it was her that incited the action. More images popped up in my head and more kept coming. I saw as Vera's delicate lips brushed mine, sucking in my lower lips deep inside her mouth. I saw as her soft hands held my head tightly making it almost impossible for me to move, her warm breath caressing my face. These images lingered for too long in my brain cells and it made me wonder if I was going crazy. At a point, I wondered if she had used a love potion on me.
I took a deep breath again and again. I wish I could sleep. As if my body heard my yearning, I dozed off till dawn.
I woke up the next day, listening to myself. I got a lot better, the wary images had vanished. I felt relieved. I needed to think straight, it was a brand new day, I thought.
I usually woke up very early. Most of the time, I don’t sleep the way I wish to. Even when I sleep, I don’t sleep carelessly. My body had been conditioned in such a way that no matter how long I had slept, immediately my body is touched by someone, I will wake up.
I went to the washroom, did the necessary things and then slid inside my room. I changed into a white bogus long sleeve with milk-coloured trousers. I did some stretching and some other indoor exercise I could do noiselessly. I practised for a few hours and when I was done, I realized I was hungry. I had a sudden urge to eat. My stomach made some certain noises and it burned as well.
I felt like going to the kitchen to get something to eat. The problem was, I had never gone there myself to take food since I arrived. Brady had always served me food. I couldn’t afford to let anyone serve me anything I would eat in the palace except Brady. I knew I could easily get poisoned. But this time, I felt so hungry that my body cringed at anything it sees. I wanted to keep myself busy with something that would keep my head off from thinking about my stomach. I went to my shelf right inside my room and picked a book. Books had always kept me occupied especially when I was in Livinas but it wasn’t what I needed most that instant. I didn’t bother to know the name of the book I picked though, I just rushed into what was written inside. I thought it would be a short read but, the narrative changed as I progressed. I began from the first page to the next and from the next to the next. It was a book about a Prince of a certain kingdom going against his father’s wish to marry a servant girl. He had fallen in love with this mystery girl but without his father’s blessing. I read extensively but couldn’t finish the book because someone interfered.
I heard someone gently knocking at the door. Who could that possibly be? I can only imagine Brady being the only person who could perhaps knock on my door that early. He was aware I usually leave my door opened most times so why didn’t he just enter without knocking, I asked myself.
I tossed the book on the bed and covered it with my blanket. “Come in,” I said. I was hoping to see him and if it was him, I wouldn’t want him to see the book I was reading. If he sees the book together and also remembers the question I asked him last night, he might start suspecting that I was up to something.
But no, that wasn't him!
Boom! Why her?
