31 The noise forced its way through her senses. Madie’s eyes flew open. Her heart was pounding, and she gasped for air, causing her to cough up phlegm. Her head ached, while her pulse beat in her ears. If anything could convince her she was Tara Crawford incarnate, this happening was it. But that noise. What is that? She sat up and looked out into the desert. The noise grew louder, and she could see a plume of dust heading her way. A dirt bike. The rider stopped to her left and climbed off the bike. He removed his helmet and placed it on the seat. A gasp escaped Madie’s lips. Douglas Crawford. She threw herself onto the ground and peered over the edge.
