The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow over the city as Ryan and Lena arrived at the rooftop restaurant. The maître d' greeted them with a smile and escorted them to their table by the window, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline. Ryan pulled out Lena's chair, and she sat down, her eyes locking onto his as he took his seat across from her. The table was set with fine china, crystal glasses, and a single red rose in a delicate vase. "You look stunning, Lena," Ryan said, his voice low and sincere. "I'm glad you agreed to dinner." Lena smiled, her cheeks flushing. "I'm glad you asked. This restaurant is beautiful." Their waiter arrived, and Ryan ordered a bottle of wine. As they perused the menu, they chatted about their companies' partnership and the potential opportunities it would bring. Once they ordered, Ryan reached across the table and took Lena's hand. "I'm excited about our collaboration, but I'm even more excited about getting to know you better," he said, his eyes sparkling with warmth. Lena's heart skipped a beat as she felt a jolt of electricity run through her body. "I'd like that," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. As they enjoyed their meal, the conversation flowed effortlessly. They talked about their passions, their families, and their dreams. The wine flowed, and the atmosphere grew more intimate. As the night wore on, Ryan signaled for the check. "Shall we?" he asked, standing up and offering Lena his arm. Lena took it, and they strolled to the elevator. As they descended to the lobby, Ryan noticed a group of suspicious-looking men lingering by the entrance. He instinctively tightened his grip on Lena's hand. The doors opened, and they stepped out into the cool night air. Ryan scanned the area, his eyes locking onto the men, who were now watching them with an unnerving intensity. Suddenly, one of the men pulled out a gun, and Ryan swiftly pushed Lena behind him. "Get down!" he shouted, his eyes scanning the area for an escape route. Lena's heart racing, she crouched behind Ryan as he expertly disarmed the attacker. The sound of gunfire echoed through the night, and Ryan swiftly took down the other men, his movements swift and precise. When the dust settled, Ryan turned to Lena, his face etched with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked, helping her up. Lena nodded, her eyes wide with fear. "Y-yes, I'm fine. Who were those men?" Ryan's expression turned grim. "I'm not sure, but I think they might have been after me. Let's get out of here." As they quickly made their way to Ryan's car, Lena couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Ryan's bravery and skill. She realized that there was more to him than met the eye. As they drove away from the restaurant, Ryan's phone rang. He answered, his expression growing more serious by the second. "What is it?" Lena asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ryan's eyes locked onto hers. "It seems our partnership has attracted some unwanted attention. I need to take care of this, but I promise you, Lena, I'll keep you safe." Lena's heart skipped a beat as she felt a rush of excitement mixed with fear. She knew that she was in this with Ryan now, and she was ready to face whatever came next. As they drove away from the restaurant, Ryan's eyes scanned the road behind them, checking for any signs of pursuit. The city lights blurred together as they sped through the streets, the only sound the hum of the engine and the soft rustle of the wind. Lena's voice broke the silence, her tone laced with concern. "Ryan, what's going on? Who were those men?" Ryan's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "I'm not entirely sure, but I think they're connected to our partnership. I'll handle it, Lena. You don't need to worry about this." Lena's brow furrowed. "Handle it? Ryan, I can take care of myself. I'm not some damsel in distress." Ryan's eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, his gaze lingering on the cars behind them. "I know you're capable, Lena. But this is different. These men are professionals. I won't risk your safety." Just then, a black SUV swerved in front of them, cutting off Ryan's car. He expertly maneuvered the vehicle, avoiding a collision, but Lena's heart skipped a beat. "Ryan, what's happening?" she asked, her voice rising. Ryan's face set in a determined expression. "They've intercepted us. Hold on." He took a sharp turn, the tires screeching as he expertly evaded the SUV. Lena's eyes widened as Ryan's driving skills were put to the test. After a few minutes of intense driving, Ryan finally lost the SUV in the crowded streets. He breathed a sigh of relief as they approached Lena's neighborhood. As they pulled up to her apartment building, Lena reached for the door handle. "Thanks for the ride, Ryan. I'll see you tomorrow." Ryan's eyes scanned the area, his gaze lingering on the shadows. "I'll walk you to your door." Lena smiled. "Ryan, I'm fine. Really." Just as she opened the door, a bullet whizzed past her head, hitting the car window behind her. Ryan's eyes widened in panic, and he swiftly pulled her back into the car. In a split second, Ryan's instincts took over, and he pushed Lena to the floor, covering her body with his. Another bullet pierced the air, and Ryan felt a searing pain in his chest. Lena's eyes snapped up to Ryan's face, her expression etched with concern. "Ryan, oh my god, you're hit!" Ryan's face contorted in pain, but he managed to smile weakly. "I'm fine, Lena. Just a scratch." As Lena's eyes locked onto the wound, she realized Ryan had taken the bullet for her. A mix of emotions swirled inside her – gratitude, fear, and anger. With a surge of adrenaline, Lena pushed Ryan off her and peered out the window, scanning the area for the shooter. Ryan's hand grasped her arm, his voice weak but firm. "Lena, get down. I'll handle this." Lena's gaze met Ryan's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. The sound of sirens echoed in the distance, and Lena knew they had to get Ryan medical attention – fast. With a newfound determination, Lena carefully helped Ryan out of the car and into her apartment building. As they stumbled into the elevator, Lena's mind racing with thoughts of what had just happened. The doors closed, and Lena's eyes locked onto Ryan's face. "We're getting you to a hospital, now." Ryan's smile faltered, his eyes drooping. "Lena...I'm sorry..." Lena's grip on his hand tightened. "Don't talk, Ryan. You're going to be okay." The elevator doors opened, and Lena swiftly guided Ryan to her apartment. As she laid him on the couch, she realized the bullet had pierced the corner of his heart. The wound was serious, but not fatal – yet. Lena's face set in a determined expression. She would do everything in her power to keep Ryan safe.
