CHAPTER 4

1031 Words
NYRA It’s been weeks since Zack saved me. He sheltered me, treated my wounds, and kept the secret of my rebirth with the witch. During the day, he would go out to hunt, trade with neighboring clans, or observe the movements of Marco’s pack. I haven’t known him long, but I’m starting to trust him. Everyone believes Nyra is dead. And in many ways, they’re right. I am Elena now. Today, finally, the time has come to see him with my own eyes. Marco’s mansion rises before us, imposing, with its dark stone façade and towers like claws pointed at the sky. Zack and I are hidden behind a tree. From here, we have a perfect view of the pack’s car entrance. The wind blows cold, but my hands are sweaty. “He usually arrives at this hour,” Zack murmurs, eyes fixed on the gates. “Every day, almost the same time.” I nod, unable to respond. My heart beats fast, pressing against my ribs. “Zack, can I ask you something?” “Yes.” “Why are you helping me? I mean… you saved me when I was dying, but why? Why are you helping me get revenge?” He sighs before looking at me, and then I see something in his silver eyes. “Because you were right, and I’ve thought a lot about it. Marco is not a good man. All of them have caused too much pain.” I frown. “What did he do to you?” I whisper, afraid of the answer. “He took away the person I loved most in the world.” Before I can ask more, we hear a black car approaching. The car stops gently in front of the mansion’s entrance. One of the guards opens the main gate. “That’s him,” I say, feeling my stomach sink. Marco gets out of the car with the same flawless posture as always. Golden-brown hair tied in a low knot, dark clothes that scream leadership. He laughs at something the guard says and nods. His voice, even from afar, is unmistakable. My body reacts before my mind. A heat rises involuntarily through my chest — but it’s swallowed by the memory. “He rejected me.” The words hit like punches again. His eyes looking at me with disgust. Amber’s mark where mine should have been. “There.” I point with my chin, swallowing hard. “He’s more arrogant than ever.” But then… she appears. Amber steps out of the passenger seat wearing a long burgundy dress. She looks stunning, her blonde hair braided to frame her eyes. But that’s not what takes my breath away. It’s her hand on her belly. A small belly. Subtle. But visible. I freeze. “No…” Marco smiles at her. He says something I can’t hear, but she laughs. And then… he kneels. Kisses her belly with care and affection. My world turns to dust. They stand there like I never existed. As if the pain, the blood, the betrayal… were nothing but dust swept from the altar. “She’s pregnant,” I whisper, in disbelief. “Pregnant… with him.” The witch’s words return to my mind, reminding me of what I gave up to be here now. I feel anger. But what hurts the most is the happiness in his eyes. A man who promised me the world is now building an empire with the woman who destroyed my life. Zack notices. He always does. “I’m sorry,” he says in a low, firm voice. I look away from the scene, trying to stop the tears. “Let’s go. Before someone sees us.” Zack stares at me for a few seconds. His silver eyes are filled with something I don’t understand. Then he gives a small smirk. “Wait here.” “What?” “Just give me ten minutes.” He gets up, adjusts his cloak, and starts walking down the slope, heading straight toward the back of the mansion. Panic rises in my throat. “Zack! Zack, what are you doing?!” But he’s already disappeared into the bushes. I stay here, squirming in rage and fear. Minutes that feel like hours pass. I watch from afar as he approaches the guards, speaks to one of them — and, to my surprise, talks directly to Marco. The Alpha listens, listens… then nods. WHAT? “No!” I whisper. Minutes later, Zack is back, with that damn smile on his face. “What did you do?” I demand as soon as he’s near. “What was that? You talked to him! You talked to Marco!” He chuckles softly, like he enjoys teasing. “You should be thanking me.” “Why?” “Because I just got you inside your ex’s house.” I freeze. “What?” “Amber has a high-risk pregnancy, didn’t you know? One of the guards told me. They were looking for a good healer or midwife with natural knowledge. And guess what?” My eyes widen. “You…” “I said I knew the best. You. Elena Havilard, the woman from the mountains, trained in herbs and ancient lunar rituals. Specialized in difficult pregnancies.” “I… but… I’m not a healer!” He shrugs. “I’m sure you’ll learn. Fast.” A nervous laugh escapes me. I throw myself into his arms and hug him tightly. I blink, and when I turn my head, Zack and I are face to face. Very close. I stop breathing when I see his silver pupils fixed on my lips. I frown, feeling something strange inside me. His hands are still holding my waist, keeping me pressed against his body. “Thank you, Zack,” I whisper, pulling away slowly. “You’re one step closer to getting what you want now.” I smile, nodding, walking through the forest beside him. I turn my head, looking at the mansion I’ve been to so many times. I’m no longer a banished werewolf. I’m a shadow inside their home. And no one will stop me from tearing it all down.
