CHAPTER 4
Rowan tore through the forest like a shadow detached from the night.
In his wolf form, the world was a blur of motion and scent. The trees were just dark streaks of gray and black rushing past him. His massive paws barely touched the ground, eating up the distance with terrifying speed. He was a predator in his element, silent and deadly. But inside his body, a war was raging. With every powerful stride he took, the shadow beast’s poison flared up in his blood. It felt like liquid fire pumping through his veins, burning his muscles and attacking his organs.
The transformation into his wolf had woken the poison completely, and now it was feeding on his Alpha magic, trying to shut his body down. His chest heaved with every breath, his lungs burning, but he refused to slow down. He kept his nose close to the ground, tracking her. Her scent was a bright, beautiful beacon in the dark forest.
Vanilla and rain. It was sweet and intoxicating, pulling him forward like a magnet.
But beneath the sweet smell of her skin, he could track the sharp, metallic tang of her fear. She was terrified.
‘Hold on, Elara', he thought, pushing his mental voice through the mate bond, hoping she could feel his calm, steady presence.
‘I'm right behind you. I'm coming'. Suddenly, the wind shifted. Rowan’s ears twitched. He slowed his pace just a fraction, his massive head lifting as he analyzed the changing air.
The scent of vanilla and rain was still there, strong and clear. But now, there was something else mixed into it. Something that made his heart skip a beat and his wolf whine in distress.
Salt.
Tears.
Rowan stopped completely, his claws digging into the soft earth. He closed his red eyes and inhaled deeply, letting his wolf senses break down the scent. She had been crying. She had been standing in this exact spot, crying her heart out. The smell of her sadness hit him harder than the poison ever could. It was a heavy, suffocating scent that made his chest ache with a profound, hollow pain.
His Alpha instincts screamed at him to find her, not to catch her, but to wrap his arms around her, to wipe the tears from her face, to tell her that she was safe. He wanted to comfort her. He wanted to take away whatever was hurting her. But he knew he was the one hurting her. She was crying because she was running from him.
She was crying because she thought she had to sacrifice her own happiness to save his life. A low, sad growl vibrated in his chest. He forced himself to focus. He couldn't let his emotions cloud his judgment. He had to catch her. He had to win. He followed the salty scent trail a few yards forward until it led him to a massive, ancient oak tree.
The roots of the tree were thick and twisted, creating small hollows in the earth. Rowan lowered his head, his nose brushing the ground as he tracked her exact footsteps. Then, his wolf instincts flared. Something was wrong.
The air here felt disturbed. The scent of vanilla was concentrated in one specific spot, right between the oak tree and a smaller sapling a few feet away. Rowan shifted his gaze from the ground to the space between the trees. To a human eye, or even a normal wolf, the ground looked perfectly normal. It was just a patch of dead leaves and dirt. But Rowan was an Alpha. His senses were sharper, his mind more analytical.
He noticed that the pile of leaves was just a little too neat. He noticed that the shadows beneath the leaves didn't quite match the uneven ground. He stepped closer, moving with slow, deliberate caution. He sniffed the air right above the leaves. He could smell the faint, green, bitter scent of crushed vine sap. He looked up. High above, a thick green vine was missing from the oak tree's branches. He looked across to the sapling. He saw the faint indentation in the bark where a vine had been pulled tight and tied off.
It was a trap.
Rowan let out a soft breath, a mixture of a huff and a sigh. Elara had set a trap for him. A strange feeling washed over him. Beneath the burning pain of the poison and the desperate urgency of the hunt, he felt a sudden, fierce surge of pride. She was so clever. She was so resourceful. Even terrified, even exhausted, her mind was working to survive.
She had used the environment, she had hidden her tracks, and she had set a perfect snare.
’I know what you’re doing, my love', he thought, his heart aching with love and frustration.
'You're trying to slow me down. You're trying to make me lose'.
He looked at the hidden vine. If he had been running at full speed, blinded by the dark, his heavy paw would have caught the vine. He would have tripped, likely twisting his leg or at least losing several minutes untangling himself. It was a brilliant trap. But Rowan was the Alpha. He wasn't just strong; he was smart. He didn't break the trap. He didn't destroy her hard work.
Instead, he carefully lifted his massive front right paw and stepped high over the hidden vine. He placed his paw gently on the other side, making sure not to disturb the leaves.
Then, he brought his back legs over in the same careful, deliberate motion. He bypassed her trap completely, without leaving a single trace that he had been there. He paused for a second, looking back at the hidden vine.
She was fighting him so hard. She was running so fast, setting traps, pushing her body to the limit, all because she loved him. The realization made the poison in his blood burn hotter, but it also fueled his determination. He turned his nose back to the wind, catching the faint trail of vanilla and rain leading deeper into the woods.
She had a head start, but he was closing the gap. Rowan lowered his head and broke into a run once more, his red eyes glowing fiercely in the dark. He would bypass every trap she set. He would outrun every step she took.
He would catch her, even if it was the last thing he ever did.
