Chapter 2: The first sounds.

She felt like she was floating in a dark space with no light, no sound; everything was hazy, as if lost in a fog. Her mind was empty at the moment, without any thoughts. She doesn't know who she is, where, and how long she has been around. She let herself drift uncertainly; it seemed that this space was where she was born and existed forever. Time was not something that could exist in this place. Because since she was conscious, she had felt that she was always here, without any strange happenings. But a minimal sound suddenly appeared in that seemingly endless sequence of time. She didn't know what it was, but her curiosity prompted her to try to grasp the strange sound. Time passed slowly, the sounds that were sometimes hidden and sometimes appeared clearer and closer. She didn't know where the sound was coming from, but just hearing the sound in this dark space made her happy. As time went on, she could hear more and more clearly the sounds around her, and the one she heard most often was a slight, regular, repetitive sound like the sound of a machine. After a while, she got used to that steady sound. She had thought that her dark world had only this sound, and there were no other sounds. But as she listened intently to the familiar steady sound, a series of noises suddenly appeared. This strange sound grew clearer, louder, and more resonant, like hammers hitting her eardrums. When she felt she couldn't stand it, it stopped very close, followed by a low voice: "Did patient Sarah have any unusual symptoms today?" "Dear doctor." It is a soprano. "All of the patient's stats are stable, but she's still in a coma." "The trauma is severe; it can take weeks or months to recover." The low male voice continued. "Especially the skull. If she recovers, it will affect her health and quality of life." It turned out that the unpleasant sound was the man's footsteps, calling the doctor. She heard him flip through a few pages, then the conversation and footsteps faded away, leaving only the familiar low, steady sound. She felt liberated; this loud sound she was not used to was terrible. According to the conversation between the two people just now, her name is Sarah, and she is currently a patient in the hospital with severe trauma and coma. Fortunately, this injury only made her not remember who she was, but she did not lose all her inherent awareness. After hearing the sounds outside, Sarah began to want to see the light. She didn't like the darkness surrounding her; she needed to escape it. She examined her body with all her might, but strangely enough, she couldn't lift her eyelids nor control any part of her body. She tried so many times, but the result was still the same. She gave up helplessly, listening to the sounds that appeared near her. The doctor said she was in a coma and couldn't control her body. Then she had only one option, and that was to wait. Not knowing how much longer had passed, Sarah was disturbed by a series of footsteps. Although she had heard loud noises from doctors and nurses before, this time there seemed to be many people, so the footsteps were so loud that her head hurt. Trying to calm the pain in her head, Sarah listened to the sounds approaching and stopped beside her. "Gentlemen, this is my wife's medical record. You see, my wife is in a coma and does not know when to recover, so we need to find a replacement for my wife's ministry." A male voice sounded; this voice was relatively young and hoarse. There was no answer. Instead, there was a rustling sound, like the sound of turning paper. "Multiple injuries, the most severe is a traumatic brain injury, so it is difficult for her to recover soon." A middle-aged woman's voice rang out. "In that case, we should find a replacement for Sarah for the time being." It is a low-pitched middle-aged male voice. "Gentlemen, I can take my wife's place." A husky young male voice. "My wife's work, I can take care of." "I would like to recommend someone else." The middle-aged woman protested. "Let Vincent take over his wife's position." It is the voice of an older man. "In the past, he was always there to help Sarah so that he would do better than the newcomer." "I support Vincent taking Sarah's position." The middle-aged man with a low voice spoke again. "Thank you for trusting me; I will do my best." The one called Vincent said solemnly. Sarah suddenly felt a warm hand grasp hers, followed by Vincent's voice, but it became extremely gentle. "Darling, you can rest assured that I have taken care of everything." "If it's agreed to let Vincent take his wife's place, then we should leave." The woman seemed displeased because she immediately slammed her heels on the floor as soon as she said that. This sharp sound was like a nail in Sarah's ear, causing her head to ache. "Yes, thank you for visiting my wife. I'll see you off." Vincent's words had just ended, and the noisy footsteps and a few conversations faded; finally, in the hospital room, only the familiar, steady mechanical sound remained. It is the sound that Sarah feels most at peace with; it helps her calm down after the noise is too much to bear. After a long while, the pain caused by the loud sound to Sarah disappeared. She recalled what she had heard, analyzing each voice of the group of people who had visited her. So she has a husband named Vincent. He told her in a very gentle tone, proving that he loved her very much. And one more piece of information is that she holds an important position in a particular company. How can a group of people come to her bedside to discuss choosing a replacement if it is unimportant? She tried to rummage through her empty memories but couldn't find her husband, Vincent. And, of course, the position that people compete for. She didn't know what it was. Again helpless, she gave up, waiting for Vincent to return. She wanted to hear him say, most likely through those words, that she would recall some memories. But she waited a long time, passed several times, and the doctor visited, but Vincent still did not come back; that is to say, it had been a few days since he had not seen her. And one thing she didn't understand was that, apart from Vincent and that group of people, none of her parents or siblings appeared. So where's her family? Where are her relatives? Or is she alone in this world, and Vincent is her only relative?
