Chapter 3: Cousin.

1047 Words
Time passed slowly, and Sarah was still in a dark space without a single ray of light. Now that she was used to the sounds around her, she no longer had the sound of shoes on the floor hurting her eardrums. The nurses here are very attentive, taking good care of Sarah daily, sometimes saying a few gentle words to encourage her to recover quickly. On an ordinary day like any other, when the doctor was examining Sarah in the morning, she suddenly heard strange footsteps approaching and stopping next to her; the sound of this person's footsteps was as steady as the sound of a machine. "Doctor, I'm Dylan, Sarah's cousin." A warm voice resounded; this voice brought Sarah a very comfortable feeling. "Hi!" The voice of this doctor. The person who introduced himself, Dylan, continued, "I was busy dealing with some foreign affairs, so I couldn't visit my sister sooner. Can you tell me more about the accident and my sister's current condition?" "As you probably know, the police concluded that Miss Sarah had an accident; they found her car still parked on the top of Mount Tanica. Fortunately, she was discovered in time by a group of mountain climbers." Then came the sound of papers flipping over and over and rustling. "Look here, her legs and arms are all broken, four broken ribs, the most serious is her skull. We sucked the hematoma into her brain, but she was in a profound coma." "Do you mean she might have a hard time recovering?" Dylan asked worriedly. "Even though we don't want to, we still have to consider the worst-case scenario." The doctor made no secret, he replied thoughtfully. "But if someone is around to talk to her regularly, she will recover sooner, and if she's lucky, she won't lose her memory when she recovers." "I understand. Thank you, doctor!" Dylan replied. The doctor closed the medical record and quickly went to another room. Sarah didn't hear Dylan's steady footsteps, so he remained beside her. In her blank memory, there was no sign of this cousin. She did not know his face, only knew that if his footsteps were so regular, he must be very disciplined. Suddenly a kiss fell on her forehead, surprising Sarah. The last time her husband visited, he only held her hand a little but did not kiss her. Yet this cousin kissed her forehead; perhaps her relationship with him was excellent. Sarah heard Dylan pull the chair closer to her side, then he took her hand and gently stroked it. His hand was as warm as his voice. "Sarah, I'm sorry I'm late. I shouldn't have been away from you for so long. Otherwise, this accident would not have happened." Sarah listened to him; he was the first member of the family to visit her other than Vincent. "The doctor said you need someone to talk to you often so that you can recover soon, so I will come here every day and tell you many stories." Dylan talked, gently squeezing Sarah's wrist and hand. "When you are healthy, you often scold me if I worry about you. But you can rest assured, I will arrange a good job so I can come here to visit you every day." Dylan's words made Sarah think of her husband. Why can't Vincent arrange to come here with her like Dylan? Suddenly she remembered some vital position he had replaced her, so maybe Vincent's work was busier than Dylan's, so he couldn't pay attention to her. "Sarah, wake up soon; it's very sunny outside. I will plant your favorite white roses in my garden. You have to wake up before they bloom." Dylan whispered, his breath warm. He gently stroked her cheek and softly said: "Sarah, are you in pain? If I could bear the pain for you, that would be great." His loving words made her want to cry, to open her eyes, to see him. But in reality, she could only lie still in her dark space and listen to him talk about the trifles around her. "You probably don't know; this is the central hospital. I'll beat Vincent up if he doesn't let you stay in a good hospital." "This room is spacious, with two large windows overlooking the hospital's garden. When you wake up, I'll show you the garden here isn't too bad." "I like your hair; I never agreed to let you cut it before because you have beautiful long hair. Unfortunately, the doctor cut it off. But that's okay; when you recover, it will grow back, very quickly." Dylan kept whispering such little stories to Sarah until someone approached, whispering in his ear. "Sir, it's time for us to go. You can't miss today's important corporate board meeting." He squeezed Sarah's hand again, softly saying, "I have to go; I'll come to see you again tomorrow." A kiss fell on her forehead, then the steady sound of his footsteps faded, finally disappearing altogether. Alone in the room, Sarah listened to the slight, steady sound of some device next to hers, replaying every word Dylan said in her mind. She fell from the top of the mountain, and the mountaineers saved her. But why did she fall from the top of the mountain? Did she have an accident while traveling? A series of questions caused Sarah's headache, but she could not remember anything about her accident, not even the slightest impression of a particular mountain. She desperately wanted memories, but her brain was blank, just like the darkness surrounding her now. Time passed slowly again; the nurses did the evening cleaning for her and quickly left. Sarah is used to living here; when night falls, the nurses do not come until the following day to examine her. The night was tranquil, no more footsteps and hospital trolley wheels grinding against the floor, so the steady sound of some device beside her became louder and more precise. Sarah relaxed her mind; although she could not open her eyes nor control her body, her mind still automatically and regularly rested. During the day, she stays awake and listens to all the sounds around her. She also sleeps at night so her brain can relax and recharge for the next day.
