Lex's POV
"A witch?" Zack growled next to me.
Werewolves weren't particularly fond of witches. We usually stayed clear and far away from them.
"Yes, Beta Zack," the warrior said anxiously.
"What the hell does a witch want with Prince Lex?" Zack growled. "Werewolves aren't associated with such creatures."
"S-she... she wants to have an audience with him," the warrior stuttered. "She says it is time-sensitive and needs to speak to him right away."
"I don't think it's a good idea," Zack said, searching my gaze. "It's a blood moon after all. We don't know what she is up to..."
I nodded, taking notice of his opinion.
I turned to the guard and inquired, "Please tell me exactly what she said. Did she provide a reason for her desire to see me?"
"No, Your Highness," he replied. "But she seems desperate. She refuses to leave our border until she speaks with you...".
"And you are afraid that her presence would attract other creatures to our borders if she stays any longer?" I asked.
The warrior swallowed hard yet nodded.
He was entitled to feel afraid. Everyone knew of the stories of King Xavier and his Beta Vito.
Vito was a powerful wizard, and he almost succeeded in killing my father.
Yet, for some reason, I was curious about why the witch came to see us.
"Bring her to me!" I ordered.
Fear crossed the warrior's eyes; however, he obeyed and quickly left my office.
"Lex, you can't be serious!" Zack hissed. "It's a blood moon night! You are dooming us all!"
"You're right," I agreed, shifting my gaze to Zack. "Make sure the guests are safe. Have extra guards attending the ball. We don't want our guests to suffer because of my decisions."
"Lex..." I gestured for Zack to stop arguing.
I knew he was right. He made some valid points, but I felt compelled to give the witch a chance to explain her sudden visit. She must have a good reason for wanting to see me.
"I need to know," I said. "There's a reason she came here."
Zack rolled his eyes to the ceiling and sighed. He was unhappy about my decision to see her, and I didn't blame him.
"Very well," he said, and his eyes gazed over
A moment later Zack's eyes returned to their natural color, and a smirk followed on his lips.
I knitted my eyebrows, confused at his sudden change of behavior.
"Why are—"
An urgent knock erupted from my office door.
"Enter," I said, turning my attention toward the door.
The door opened, revealing three pairs of guards.
I growled, annoyed at Zack. He called my personal guards to the office.
"This is unnecessary!" I hissed in frustration.
"Unnecessary?" Sai asked upset as she came closer, followed by her mate. She was like a second mother to me and always by my side. "Are you kidding me? You are allowing a witch to enter the territory and approach you. We have a duty to protect our future king."
My furious gaze shifted to Zack, and he shrugged and smiled.
"I am only doing my duties as Beta and head of your personal guard," he said innocently. "Besides, who can protect you better than your own personal guards? It's their obligation to ensure your safety."
My gaze traveled over the group. They had already established a protective barrier around me, concentrating their attention on the door. Each pair possessed exceptional training and unique abilities.
The only pair that wasn't present was Beta Luke and his mate Lula. They were still in transit from Opal Pack and anticipated their arrival shortly.
Zack was the first half of the fifth pair—he still needed to find his mate. I announced his status the moment I saw his mother cradling him in her arms.
My words clearly surprised Jax and Mila. They never imagined that their youngest son would end up as my personal guard.
A quick knock on the office door had the wolves on high alert.
"Enter," I called, sitting back in my chair.
The same warrior, who announced the witch's arrival, opened the door and stepped inside. His face reflected anxiety.
I knitted my eyebrows as the unknown scent filled my nostrils. It didn't smell dangerous, yet powerful.
"Where is she?" I asked confusedly, shifting my head to the side, unable to see her.
The warrior shivered as he stepped aside, revealing a small dark figure standing behind him.
My gaze swept over the tiny black thing. She was wearing an oversized black cloak, the hoodie hiding her face. She didn't look taller than 5'1.
Why was the warrior so afraid of her? They were much larger and stronger than her.
"It's an honor to be in your presence, Prince Lex," she said, her angelic voice ringing in my ears. "But I came to warn you...."
The guards growled at her words, yet she ignored them.
"Who are you?" Zack asked, his eyes shifting between black and green.
Why was his wolf fighting for control?
"Oh, dear beta," she said, her voice even and in control as she slowly raised her head slightly. "You know what I am. You can feel the pull. I can feel it too!"
"You're a royal guard?" I heard Sai mutter next to me in shock. "How is that possible?"
"I am," she said. "Even though I am not of your species."
My gaze shifted over the guards. Their faces were hard. They didn't like anything about her being there.
"You said you are here with a warning," I asked.
The girl stepped forward once more, making my guards growl at her.
She raised her head. Anger flashed through her clear, almost icy blue eyes.
"Is that how you welcome and treat a new guard, your Beta's mate?" She asked and snapped her fingers, making them all silent. I could feel the enchantment that rendered the guards speechless.
"For a witch so young, you are quite captivating," I remarked. "I am impressed by your skills."
She calmly shifted her gaze toward me; a smile played at the corner of her lips as she slipped the hoodie from her head.
Zack gasped and froze, stunned in his place. His mate was surely beautiful.
"I will never be as powerful as you, your highness," she said, smiling.
Her face suddenly turned serious as she stepped closer to my desk.
The wolves shifted uncomfortably around her.
"But I must warn you," she said, anchoring her focus on me. "There are others who seek your throne and power. Everything is not as it seems. Don't always trust what you see. One decision could lead to the loss of your magic and wolf…"
What did she mean by that?
