I must have fallen asleep, but suddenly an unbearable pain woke me up. My head was pounding like an engine and I wanted to scratch my eyes out because they hurt so much. My ears felt like they were bleeding and I heard a constant whistling. I groaned and curled up. So I stayed. I could not move. My arms, my chest, my legs..everything hurt and I cried out in pain. Bad idea. My teeth and jaw clicked and everything went numb. Oh God. It really happened. Nick had described it correctly. I sobbed and the tears ran down my cheeks. My heart was racing and I was sweating. I narrowed my eyes. Suddenly a hand rested on my shoulder and my eyes widened in shock. "Shhh I'm here. You don't need to be afraid." Elijah sat on the edge of the bed and gently rubbed my back. "It hurts so much," I sobbed, immediately regretting even having said anything. I closed my eyes again and waited for the next thrust. When it came, pain from other planets shot through me. I grabbed Elijah's hand and nearly crushed it I gasped and sobbed, feeling like I was on fire, ripping through my body inch by inch, setting everything in their path on fire. "Soon it will be over. It won't be long," he assured me, holding my hand and rubbing the back of my hand with his thumb soothingly. I looked at him with glassy eyes and he wiped my tears away. "Another boost will come soon. That should have been the last. You've been tormenting yourself all night. I heard you" he said softly and I even thought I heard sympathy in his voice. And then it came. The last push. The others had been for a walk, this one was unbearable. I screamed, the whole school must have heard that My jaw clicked again and I doubled over in pain. Nick had lied. I was going to die. Nobody could take that kind of pain. Nobody. I let out another scream and Elijah held my hand and tried to calm me down. He stroked my hair and wiped away my tears. It felt like the pain would last for hours. But then the surge passed as quickly as it came. Utterly exhausted, I sank into the pillows. My wet top stuck to my body and beads of sweat ran from my forehead down my face. It was done. The transformation and with it the end of my normal life. I sobbed. I felt sorry for myself and regretted coming to London. Maybe my life would be the same now as it was two days ago. And now I was a freak. I buried my face in the pillow and cried into it. Elijah continued to stroke my hair. But after a while he withdrew his hand and stood up. I turned around and grabbed his arm. Maybe my life would be the same now as it was two days ago. But after a while he withdrew his hand and stood up. I turned around and grabbed his arm. "No, please stay. I don't want to be alone" I asked softly and tugged lightly on his sleeve "Please" He sighed and looked at me. "It's not really my style, but .. okay. Besides, I can't risk you mauling anyone tonight," he said, stretching out on the bed next to me. I sank onto the pillow, relieved. Elijah was actually the last person I wanted to see, but he was here and I somehow felt safe with him, even though I hardly knew him. "Sleep now Elizabeth. It's going to be a tough day," he said, reaching out to me. But apparently he changed his mind and folded his arms instead. I looked at him. "You know Elijah. I don't think you're as mean as you pretend," I said softly and closed my eyes. The night was so exhausting that I fell asleep immediately. When I woke up my throat was dry and my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth. I sat up and held my head. It was pounding and my eyes hurt too. Elijah was gone and I was actually quite happy about that. Then I didn't have to endure an awkward conversation, although he certainly didn't care. Any emotion bounced off him. I swung my legs off the bed and stood up unsteadily. I stretched carefully and went to the bathroom. I was actually feeling pretty good, except for my sore throat and headache and body aches. I looked at myself in the mirror. My eyes looked normal and so did my teeth. What was I expecting? Red eyes and fangs? Suddenly I heard footsteps in the hallway. In the hallway! Could you believe it? And a whistle. I had to smile. That was pretty cool. Shortly thereafter the door was pushed open. "Good morning Nick" I called from the bathroom and tied my hair up to do my morning wash. "I see Bee you're one of us now." He leaned into the bathroom door frame and looked at me with a grin. I brushed my teeth and looked at him "Welcome to the vampire club." I pushed him out of the bathroom and slammed the door to "Privacy Nick," I reminded him and got ready. I put on my makeup and combed my hair as usual. Then I went back into the room and searched my closet for something to wear. "How are you feeling Bee?" asked Nick, who had made himself comfortable on my bed. I gave him a look and pulled a brown suede skirt out of my closet. A white top and my dark blue denim jacket. I couldn't break that habit "Honestly? I really feel great. The pain is gone. Only my head is still buzzing and my throat is completely dry. I'm hungry. But otherwise. I'm really great. As if the day didn't even happen yesterday" I confessed and got dressed in the bathroom. "I can give you something for your hunger" I sat down on the bed next to Nick and he pulled a red pouch out of his jacket pocket. "Is that .. blood? So is that really true? I asked, pointing to it. Nick unscrewed the cap and the smell of rust hit me. Oh my god. And it smelled sweet. Delicious. I closed my eyes and inhaled the scent A dark growl escaped my throat and I bared my teeth. "Wow take it easy kitty" Nick laughed and handed me the bag "Take it easy" I hesitantly took it and put it to my lips. But as soon as the first drop of blood touched my lips, I was thirsty. I sucked the last drop out of the bag and let my head fall back. I ran my tongue over my lips. "That was the best thing I've ever drunk." I looked at Nick and handed the empty blood bag back to him. "It's totally normal Bee. As soon as you smell blood you go crazy. It will always be like this, but you will eventually learn to control yourself. A lot will change now and I'm looking forward to it. We haven't had a little vampire in a long time" he grinned at me and jumped off the bed. "Come. breakfast soon" I also got up and went to the closet and picked out matching boots. As I turned around, I heard the doorbell ring and shortly thereafter a babble of voices. Nick opened the door and a sweet scent wafted into the room. It smelled like a summer day and was so incredibly intense. I imagined it like a field full of strawberries. I inhaled the scent and my mouth watered. Then I heard something. A hiss and a thump. No, no pounding. More like a drum. Lots of drums combined with the noise. Like the sound of the sea. Paired with the scent it was irresistible. Delicious. I licked my lips and thought about the blood bag. The blood had first smelled rusty and then sweet. I wanted more of this. A growl like before came out of my throat and my whole body tensed. The pounding hearts and the rushing blood drew me like a magnet. "Bee, calm down. This is completely normal. But you can't tear anyone out there and suck them dry to the last drop. These are students. Children" Nick walked up to me and put his hands on my shoulders. He looked at me intently. But the only thing I could think of was the delicious blood and the running buffet in the hallway. "But I'm so hungry" I hissed and pushed Nick away from me. He flew across the room in a high arc and crashed into the wall. Startled, I covered my mouth with my hands and ran to him. "Oh my goodness Nick. I'm sorry for that. I didn't want to...are you alright?" I asked, kneeling in front of him. I looked down at my shaking hands. What had happened to me? I had completely lost control of myself and only had one thing on my mind. Blood "I had become a monster. A dangerous monster with a bloodthirst and insatiable hunger. I wrapped my arms around my body and narrowed my eyes. "Bee. Look at me. I'm good. I am a vampire. You can't hurt me." Nick put his hands on my cheeks and forced me to look at him. "This is completely normal. You're hungry and.. it was stupid of me to leave you unprepared and let loose on the poor people right away. Come on get up" he pulled me up and brushed my hair out of my face "We'll wait until they're gone. Then it shouldn't be that difficult" he looked at me encouragingly and I nodded. Now I didn't feel as great as before. I was a goddamn monster. What would my friends think of this? Oh my goodness. Poppy and Lucas. They must have been worried. But, would you still want to have anything to do with me? You would definitely hate me. "Nick, I have to call my friends," I said, looking at him. Talking to them would definitely help. "No, you will not call your friends. You have to keep that to yourself, understood? Otherwise you're endangering everyone's life here. Also, there aren't any nets around here." Elijah stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. He didn't give a damn and I knew he wasn't going to bring up the subject. But maybe that was for the best. "She needs something to eat. Otherwise she's causing another bloodbath here" Beside me, Nick just sighed and pushed me toward the door. He certainly didn't have it easy with Elijah. As well as. He was grumpy and somehow always in a bad mood. Only his behavior tonight confused me. He had been gentle and kind. But why? I followed Elijah down the aisle. I could still hear the voices, but no one was there anymore. "Vampire hearing" whispered to me, tapping himself on his ear. Like yesterday, we followed Elijah into the large entrance hall, but we crossed it and entered what I suspected Outhouse. I kept close to Nick because I was really afraid I might lose control. It wasn't easy, but I tried to think of something else. But the irresistible smell of blood was everywhere here. Goosebumps covered my body and my muscles were tense. Ready in an instant. We passed two doors that were ajar. I heard voices and laughter. The banging of cutlery and the clatter of plates. And a faint smell of waffles, bacon, and eggs wafted toward me . But the scent of blood was stronger. I clung to Nick's arm and forced myself to stay with him. The last door was wide open and we entered a small room. It was modern but comfortably furnished, like everything here. The house must be ancient and the hallways here looked old too. But the rooms were modern furnished. In the center was a dark brown wooden table surrounded by leather-covered chairs. There was a sideboard against the wall to the right. On it were bowls of fruit and plates of bacon and eggs. There was orange juice and cherry juice. Pictures hung on the wall on the other side. They showed children. These were certainly the children who went to school here. Nick nudged me, snapping me out of my thoughts. The last door was wide open and we entered a small room. It was modern but comfortably furnished, like everything here.
