Lucas’s scream filled the room, causing me to bolt from the bed, my heart pounding in my chest. I barely had time to register when I heard his terrified voice call out.
“Mummy”
I didn't think, running towards his scream everything was a blur as I flung the door to the living room open.
Lucas was pressed against the window, he was shaking, his finger pointing at the corner of the room.
“There was someone there," he sobbed.
I gathered him into my arms trying to coax him. “It’s okay, baby, it’s okay.”
My eyes snapped to the window, narrowing. Everything looked normal, everything felt normal.
But my instincts screamed otherwise.
Footsteps thundered from the hall. Eric burst into the room, shirtless, already brimming with fury.
“What happened?”
I turned to him, as I cradled Lucas. “He says he saw someone. Said a man was right here at this corner.” I said as I pointed.
Eric peered out the window, his entire body tensed. He didn’t speak for several seconds.
“I smell him.” he said, his voice low and deadly.
My breath caught. “What?”
“Someone was here,” Eric growled. “It could be Vincent’s men or Kyle's.”
“Eric,” I felt myself whisper, as I tightened my grip on Lucas, “the children”
“I know,” he said, his eyes still scanning the room like he believed the man was still in there with us. “They're great assets, if controlled properly, dangerous weapons”
“My children are not weapons” I found myself screaming.
“That's not what I meant”
“I don’t care what you meant, don't ever refer to them as such”
He nodded making me feel bad, this wasn't his fault.
He pulled out his phone, already dialing. “jaden. Code Silver. Mobilize every guard, the strongest wolves I'm the pack. We must secure them no matter what.”
Before the sun fully rose, the entire building was crawling with wolves. Still I couldn't shake the feeling off, that fear of both Eric and his rivals.
I sat at the kitchen table nestling the children close. They were quiet with Lily clutching my hand like it was a lifeline, and Lucas glancing over his shoulder.
I felt defeated, they were too young to experience this. This much fear.
Eric stepped in, his eyes sweeping the room, we hadn't left the building in days.
“For now they're safe” he said.
I met his eyes they were alert, dangerous.
“They would still come after the twins” Eric said without sugarcoating it. “if Vincent gets his hand on them, not only would he win this war, he could start many more and control the outcome.”
I swallowed. “why the twins?”
“Because they’re half breeds, not just any kind but one born of a human and an alpha. If he gets his hands on them, he’ll either use them to destroy everyone or destroy them to get control.”
I felt my stomach turn. “They’re just kids.”
“They’re powerful,” Eric said softly.
Vincent stood before a long stone table, where his inner circle of lieutenants awaited him.
“They’ve increased security,” Jax, his second-in-command said. “Eric knows we’re watching.”
Vincent leaned forward. “He’s scared. He should be. But fear won’t stop me.”
“But we can't underestimate him”
“I didn't get this far by underestimating my enemy Jax. If my enemies aren't powerful, then they aren't my enemies” he said as he gave a low chuckle.
He turned toward a tall woman, Alina, his Beta. “What have you learned?”
Alina pulled a scroll from her cloak and laid it flat.
“There’s an ancient lore, scattered, fragmented. Some say children born of human and wolf blood possess unique traits. A connection to both worlds. If trained young, they can become ....”
“powerful?” Vincent’s voice dripped with interest.
“Empaths, Telepaths, Healers, Or monsters or all four,” Alina added with a smile.
Vincent’s eyes gleamed. “And if raised by someone like me?”
“Whatever you want them to be,” Alina said with icy calm.
Vincent grinned. “Then it’s time to test their strength.”
I listened as Eric commanded his guards, with Jaden by his side. He reminded me of a king, built for war. His eyes were sharp and calculating but when he turned to me, he softened.
“We’re moving, ” he said.
“What?” I felt tense.
“To my house, that'd be more secure”
I shook my head. “i don't want them anywhere your kind”
“their kind. And It’s temporary,” Eric said with finality. “ it's either they stay with their kind or they fall into the hands of Vincent”
I saw the burden in his eyes and felt sorry but I had to put the kids first.
“You promised me peace, Eric,” I whispered.
“And I’ll give it to you,” he swore. “But you need to survive first.”
His house was hidden, nestled high in the mountains, only accessible by two guarded paths and aerial drones. I had never seen anything like it before, but the moment we arrived, I understood why Eric chose it.
Stone walls. Reinforced doors. Cameras. Layers of protection.
Still, I couldn’t relax. My mind went back to the penthouse, that had been a message, a warning and it was only a matter of time before the next one came.
The twins adjusted quickly. Lily was fascinated by the house, and Lucas clung close to Eric, mimicking his every move.
It was only a matter of time before Eric's pack found out about them, before they came searching and we needed to be prepared.
Eric joined me on the porch while the children slept. The sky was clear, the stars bright.
“Tell me, What are we really up against?”
I heard Eric exhale as if he was considering whether to answer my question.
“Vincent doesn’t care about rules. He doesn’t care about blood or honor. To him, the twins are nothing more than leverage. Power .”
I looked at him, searching his face. “Do you think he’ll try to take them?”
Eric turned towards me. “I know he will.”
Silence stretched between us. As we stared at each other, our eyes saying more than we wanted to hear
“I never wanted any of this,” I finally whispered. “I just wanted to raise them in peace.”
“I know.” He took my hand. “And I never wanted to drag you into this.”
Three days passed without any danger. Eric doubled the guards and I homeschooled the twins. Things slowly felt normal
Then it happened, on the fourth day, like it was counting on us to relax.
Lucas sat quietly on the couch, coloring. His brows furrowed as his head tilted slightly.
“Mommy?” he whispered. “Someone’s whispering.”
I looked up. “What do you mean, baby?” I asked, my lips trembling.
“I can hear them,” he said. “Like inside my head.”
I froze.
“what are they saying?”
“They’re calling my name.” he said innocently
Before I could answer, a guard stormed in.
“Alpha! We have company”
I scooped up the twins as Eric barked orders.
“Get them underground. Now!”
Vincent’s scouts moved with precision. They didn’t need to reach the children today, they just needed to send a message to test how close they could get before Eric struck.
Alarms blared as lights flared in the darkness. Eric transformed mid-run, his wolf tearing through the woods with a snarl. His guards behind him, surrounding the threat.
But the invaders were already gone. All that remained was the scent they left behind
Eric’s heart thundered. He knew he was getting cornered, he needed to train the twins if he was going to win this war, he just needed Selena to trust him enough so that he could control them.
He returned to the house, blood still fresh on his claws, and found Selena holding the twins in the underground bunker.
“They got close?” I whispered
“Too close.” he answered. “If only you could..”
“No” I knew what he wanted, what he meant.
He didn’t speak just simply pulled the children into his arms.
But deep down, I could feel something coming.
Lucas lay in bed then suddenly he sat upright with a gasp.
Lily stirred beside him. “What’s wrong?”
“I saw him,” Lucas whispered. “In my dream. The silver-eyed man” He said
“I want Mommy.” lily whimpered
But I was already standing in the doorway, watching them, my face drained of its colour.
Because I had the same dream.
