I picked a smooth pebble off the floor and tossed it into the pond, watching as it rippled over the surface before sinking to the bottom. It didn’t do much to calm the confusion in my heart, so I searched for another. This time, it barely bounced twice before sinking and I cursed. I tried to find another, but none seemed to be smooth enough. I was just about to give up when a hand appeared in my vision, and in it was a smooth pebble. “This one should work.” I looked up to find Carlos standing in front of me. He had one hand shoved in his pocket, and the other held the smooth pebble.
