Luke's POV:
“I’m sorry,” I finally break the silence between us, rubbing my hand through her silk hair. I can’t believe she's real.“I guess I just wanted to do the right thing, for once in my life. They held me captive for weeks. I didn’t break until I was told they had you.”
She looks up at me, and I release my hold on her. “I didn’t even know you existed, Lilah. Even before this moment, I doubted your existence. But I couldn’t risk it, I couldn’t risk what they would do to you if I didn’t submit.” Surprisingly I don't feel worn out admitting that I have a weakness to her, I feel like I’ve known her my whole life. I should have known her my whole life. I should have protected her.
She nods in understanding before she sits up. “You look just like her,” Lilah says, “you look like mom.”
I smile at her, and it feels foreign on my lips. “You look like her too.”
“I’m sorry I reacted that way. I’ve only dreamt of the day I would finally meet my baby brother, but I was willing to wait. Not like this. We’re empowering them, Luke.” Her brows knit in concern.
“Baby brother?” I question.
“I’m older by a few seconds, therefore I’m the big sister.” Her smile doesn't reach her eyes and I can’t stop looking at her. Her face is so innocent and pure but in her eyes, in those eyes something is off.
“What are we going to do, Luke? The elders’ power is only going to grow now they have an Alpha of blood.”
“Who are the elders? What do they want?”
“Three elders. A witch, the beta, and the omega of the original Blue Blood pack. They were bound by the curse just like us, we are all stuck in this pack until our very last breath. It was a punishment put on us decades ago,” she looks at me sincerely, “the only way to stop it is by cutting off the next Alpha line, and that’s us. The elders want to be immortal; they want power, and they don’t care who they hurt to get it. They will never let you walk away.”
She lets out a long breath before continuing, “you can’t have a child, Luke. You can’t give the Blue Bloods an heir. I’ve fixed myself, and you can too.” She gets up, looking around the room frantically for something.
Fix myself? What the hell does she mean? “Lilah?” I call, but she keeps searching like she’s going to find anything hiding in this crazy pillow room! “Lilah, stop!” It all clicks, she fixed herself, so she is unable to produce a child of Alpha blood. She doesn’t stop tossing her pillows and blankets to the floor, “It’s too late! That won’t help!”
She stops in her tracks, looking back at me, “what do you mean?”
“It’s too late,” I repeat, standing up. Lilah comes to stand in front of me fear taking over her sweet features.
“His name,” I breathe heavy, “his name is James.”
Coming clean to my sister isn’t hard at all, which is weird since I’m never used to telling people my business. I stay to myself, but it feels natural to tell my sister the truth. Tell her the big secret I will give my life to keep from any danger. My son.
She cries and we talk for what feels like forever, and all of our brainstorming comes down to the only known solution out there.
“The only way out is to bond with a witch, kind of ironic since a witch is who put us under this curse anyway. We need a witch that shares a bond with a werewolf, with one of us” She gestures between us, “And witches don’t really bond with our kind.” Lilah rests her chin on her knees as she hugs herself. “In other words, brother, we’re doomed. If they find out James is a hunter, they won’t rest until he’s under their control.”
“Actually…” I think back to the ball and the beautiful redhead that stole my heart.
Were we bonded for this very reason? I can’t think of anything in the world that would make the Moon God mate a werewolf with a witch. We’re enemies; it isn’t right. But then again, Ellie is only half-witch, “Does the witch have to be full blood?” I ask.
“Not that I know of. Any witch blood in their veins would do. I tried once, a witch named Nema. She’s been around for years, but her hate for our kind runs too deep. And it’s not really a good selling point to have someone get close to you only to sacrifice you in the end. The love has to be pure, almost destined.”
“Kind of like a mate bond,” I think aloud.
“Exactly like a mate bond.” She looks at me, hope shining in her eyes.“What is it?” She asks right before the door swings open and the witch marches in. “That's enough, let’s go, Alpha,” she spits the last word with disgust.
“Don't f*****g tell me when it’s enough!” I yell back at her. What the hell does the Alpha title even mean? I don’t get any f*****g respect, and all they do is order me around like their puppet.
A scream rings out around us, I turn back to Lilah at the sound of it, only to find her thrashing on the floor screaming in pain.
“Stop!” I lunge for the witch, but the older man from earlier stands behind her, “your sister will be dead before you succeed in killing Sage.”
“I said stop!” I order.
“Sage.”
At his voice, the witch looks away from Lilah, leaving her panting in a pile of sweat. “Shall we?” He orders me, and I reluctantly follow behind him out of the dungeons.
I turn back, watching Sage close the latch on the door with her blood, realizing it might be the only way in there. Of course, they aren’t going to make this easy.
We make it past the bookshelf that slides close behind us.
“Declan?” The older man calls, “what are you doing in here?” Declan is in the middle of the room looking as lost as I have ever seen his before.
“Silas, I… I’m not sure.”
“Sage, see to it that Declan doesn’t make it past this doorway again.” Silas orders Sage.
Sage grabs Declan by the back of the neck, but he nudges her off and walks out with her following.
Something drew him to this room. He is obviously looking for something, but what? Or who?
“I hope your stay here is well enough because your reign will be a long one, Alpha. Anything you need, we are at your disposal. Training for the pups will begin first thing in the morning.” Silas watches me for a beat before leaving me alone. Is he f*****g kidding? Hope my stay is well enough? How well would it be if I didn’t want to f*****g be here! Like I had a choice in the matter!?
At least I know what I have to do to put an end to the Blue Bloods. I just hate having to ask something so cruel of my sweet mate. But I know she will be able to pull it off. She is tough, strong. Ellie has her whole life ahead of her; she doesn’t need someone like me. No one does, and if saving my son from this curse is my way of going out, I’m proud to do it.
