Chapter 9

1493 Words
Ellis POV: I can see the intimidation behind Mateo's eyes at the presence standing behind me. I’m afraid to turn around. Not because I think it will hurt me, but because there is a pull that’s begging me to turn around. I’m afraid that if I do face him, I won’t be able to contain myself. This is a moment I have been longing for my whole life. I just found out it was possible, is it too possible that it’s happening today? Slowly turning, I am met with the most sensual aura. He’s standing inches from my face. He’s tall, not as tall as Mason, maybe 5’11. I can’t help as my eyes travel his body. His navy blue suit hugs his body just right, showing off every muscle. His white button-up is left open at the top, making him look classy yet laid back at the same time. He wears a red tie, the same red as my hair. It looks perfect on him. He looks perfect. I look up to look directly into his eyes. The most beautiful deep blue eyes, the eyes that have haunted me for months. It’s Luke. His persona demands respect. He looks exactly the same but his hair is different. His black curls are cut short at the top of his head and the sides are buzzed now. I like it better this way. His hands are balled into fists at his sides, he looks angry and tense. Was he angry to see me? But something is off, this isn't how someone should look when they first see their mate. Was I reading into this wrong? My body is on edge, just like it was the first time I saw him. My palms are sweaty and I can’t slow my racing heart. I want to reach out and touch him. Would I feel a spark? Was it him all along? “Luke?” Iris's voice sounds behind me, he finally breaks eye contact to look at her. My heart breaks a little when he looks away from me. I can’t read him, I can’t read his eyes, and I am usually good at reading people. My mom used to tell me it was my superpower. “You’re alive.” She says breathlessly. Cole and Mason stand close behind her. Ravi and Gloria make their way to their sides. He doesn’t say anything, as he glances between her and me like he is trying to figure something out. “We looked for you, we searched for weeks. We saw the scene by the river, we all thought that you… we thought…” “I’m alright.” He finally answers. “He’s more than alright.” A brown-haired man walks forward, he has some of the same features as Luke with a young girl at his side. They all look as if they could be related. Him I can read, he craves power and would do anything to get it. But there is something else to it, it’s like he is being controlled by something, someone. A dark aura engulfs him. His kind is dangerous. The girl has no hope in her eyes. It looks as though she has already given up on life. I can feel her sadness seeping into me as I read her. I look back up at Luke’s face. Still, nothing. I can’t read him. “I’m glad you have met our Alpha. Now I am afraid you may possess someone who belongs to us.” He points to Gloria. “Alpha?” Mason questions as he grabs my arm gently guiding me away from Luke. Luke’s eyes quickly dart to where Mason holds me, and as I back away I immediately miss his presence around me. “You’re the f*****g Alpha of the Blue Bloods?” Cole yells to Luke. “Not here!” Mason looks at his brother. “Why are you here?” Mason uses his aura demanding an answer. “As I said, you have something that belongs to us.” The brown-haired guy moves to grab Gloria when Ravi jumps in front of her, blocking his path. “Declan!” The young girl with them calls out. I’m not sure if she is calling for the one she called Declan or Ravi’s safety. I can’t think straight, I look up to see Luke is watching me too. Ravi growls loudly pulling our eyes away from each other as Declan tries making his way to Gloria again. Gloria is afraid. I close my eyes and cast a boundary around her. I can’t shield a whole pack but one person is usually no problem. Declan makes a move towards her again, bouncing off my shield. He looks around shocked, trying to find the source. His eyes land on me. “You b***h,” he makes his way towards me and I stand there ready for him to come at me. I am not going to back down to this bully. But before he can even get close, Luke jumps in front blocking Declan’s advances at me. “Back off!” He looks at his pack member threateningly. Declan’s eyes gloss over and I can tell they are mind-linking. Whatever he must have said makes Luke stand down but he doesn't move from in front of me. Luke turns to look past me at Mason. “We don’t want any trouble and no harm will come to the girl, but she’s coming with us.” His eyes hold a plea. “No, the f**k she’s not!” Ravi growls out, the crowd around us starts looking our way. “Please,” Gloria cries. “I can’t go back there please.” She begs Mason. “She smells of rouge, you have no claim to her. Now I’m going to ask you once, leave now.” Mason speaks calmly while Cole has moved closer to Ravi’s side in a defensive stance. He is always ready for a fight. Iris, Mateo, and Mila gesture the crowd away from the dance floor and into the main hall for the reception. A few of our pack members who are in attendance surround us. A few unfamiliar faces stand around as well, I pick up that they are Blue Bloods. I am not moving from my spot. Even if this turns into a bloodbath and I stand in the middle of all the action, I don’t want to move from his presence. His eyes meet mine again and it looks like they are pleading with me to go. But I stand frozen in place. How could he ask me to go? Is he not feeling this? Declan looks around, taking in that they are outnumbered. But it doesn’t look like he cares. “We're not leaving without her!” He yells. I move to stand by Gloria who is crying silently behind Ravi. “That’s enough! We will not start a war we cannot win over one girl. We’re leaving!” Luke commands but his aura isn’t as effective on Declan. He must be his beta, but he isn’t fully committed to his Alpha as he should have been. I don’t want to leave Luke around him, I don’t trust the guy. Declan turns to make a jump for Gloria. I shield her again but Ravi is faster, punching Declan straight in the face causing him to fall on his ass. The girl runs to his side to help him up, “Get off of me, Kimberly!” He shoves her away and she falls to the ground. “We’re leaving!” Luke’s Alpha aura commands his pack. After some sneers, they head for the door. “This is not over!” Declan directs at Gloria as he gets up and storms out of the building. Luke turns to help Kimberly up, and I hate the way she looks at him like he is her savior before following him to the door. “Luke?” I call behind him, making him stop in his tracks. I step closer to him, ignoring Cole calling my name for me to stay back. “Luke,” I say again just to feel his name on my lips. “Ellie.” He turns back halfway to look at me, finally letting me read the fight in his eyes. I extend my hand grabbing for his arm. When I make contact, pleasurable sparks travel through my body. His scent of earthy sandalwood is stronger and more enticing up close. It is like a spell breaks the moment I touch him. His body seems to relax with my touch. Like I am his peace. “We must go.” Kimberly grabs for his other arm and I can’t help the scowl I send her way. He looks from her to me before pulling out of my grasp and running out of the door. “Luke!” I scream, my voice cracking. Mate?
