Love Richmond
Wayne and Nick coming helped me get my mind off work and that helped clear my mind and make me able to concentrate on the work. I came to the conclusion that the business had a steady profit and it was okay for my boss to close on the deal, much to his delight.
“You are free to come tomorrow or you could spend the weekend there with your family.” Neil offered.
I chuckled, “I already spent time with them. I’m ready to come back home.”
“Pack your bags the jet will be ready in about twenty minutes.” My boss, Neil, said.
“Okay sir. Thank you.” I said then I hung up. “Is everyone ready?” I yelled.
“I am mommy!” Nick yelled as he came running towards me.
“Where is Wayne?” I asked Nick who just shrugged as he went to jump on the bed.
I walked to the bathroom to find Wayne murmuring something as he looked at himself in the mirror. I didn’t know whether I should knock or just walk away and not interrupt him in whatever it was that he was doing. Ever since he got that phone call he’s been weird and distant, I expected him to tell me what it is but when he didn’t, I assumed he didn’t want to talk about it so I didn’t push it.
“Oh Love, how long have you been there? I hope I wasn’t keep you waiting?” Wayne said with a nervous chuckle as he packed his toiletries.
I smiled, “no you haven’t. I came to check if everything is alright with you.” I said as I gently touched his shoulder and he flinched, making me pull my hand away. I have to admit that did make my heart sink but I kept a smile on my face. “We should get going, the plane is waiting.” I stated as I walked out of the bathroom. Was it something I did or said? I couldn’t help but wonder.
The trip back was filled with Nick’s sounds of awe as he kept saying how small the things looked from up here. The pilots even let him in the cockpit and Nick as excited but Wayne was still silent and sneaking glances at me but never really saying anything. He dropped Nick and I back at our apartment, waved us goodbye and drove off.
“Is there something wrong with Wayne?” Nick asked as we walked into the building.
I guess I wasn’t imagining Wayne’s sudden mood change, even Nick saw it. “I don’t know sweetie but I think he will be fine.” I said as I carried Nick inside.
I prepared him for bed, read him a bed time story then kissed him goodnight. I decided to have a relaxing bath after the week I had, I was about to enjoy my bath when my phone rang. I sighed as I debated whether or not I should ignore it, it was at night maybe the person would just assume that I fell asleep I thought but then again it might be important.
I went to get my phone, it was an unknown number, “Hello? Love speaking.” I answered.
“Hey Love.” Quin said.
“What do you want?” I asked with a completely different tone.
“There is no need for you to be mad at me. We are adults and we can have a reasonable conversation.” Quin said and I could hear the smirk in his voice.
“I’ll ask again, what do you want?” I asked sternly.
Quin snickered, “I was hoping to take Nick off of your hands tomorrow, if that’s okay with you?”
“Quin, Nick is our son not some business deal that you can ‘take out of my hands.’” I exclaimed.
Quin sighed, “could I take Nick over the weekend or not?” He asked.
“I’ll ask him tomorrow then I’ll give you the feedback.” I stated.
“He is a child, Love!” Quin yelled, “all you have to do is tell him to come with me and he’ll obey.”
“That’s where you and I are quite different Quin. Just drop by tomorrow and we’ll see what Nick wants.” I stated sternly, “goodnight Quin.” I hung up before he could decide to tell me some other thing I didn’t care for.
Now that I had talked with Quin my morale to have a bath had just vanished, he had a way of taking the fun out of things for me, I wonder how Ivy was able to handle him. But that’s none of my business I thought as I went to take a quick shower then when back into bed.
I woke up the next morning, made some breakfast and Nick woke up just as I had finished making breakfast. “Good morning mom.” He said with a yawn.
“Good morning to you too baby.” I replied, “you’re just in time for some breakfast.”
“Thank you, mom.” Nick said with a smile when I pulled the chair out for him.
“Oh honey I also wanted to ask you…” I started when the bell rung. I went to open it and it was Quin.
“Where are you little man? I have so much planned for the both of us.” Quin barged into the house trying to find Nick. I closed the door and followed Quin.
“I bought you this.” Quin said as he gave Nick a toy bus.
Nick took it and looked at it then he looked at me, I shrugged then he looked back at Quin, “thank you?” Nick said but it came out as a question.
“What’s wrong Nick? I thought you liked buses.” Quin, who had squatted to be on the same size with Nick, said.
“When I was three-years-old, I’m ten now.” Nick muttered.
Quoin looked at me then at Nick, “what do you like now?” Quin asked.
“I don’t know yet. I have a variety of things that I like.” Nick said excitedly.
“How about you and I hang out today and we can get to see what else you like.” Quin suggested.
Nick looked at me, “can I go mommy?” He asked.
“If you want to baby.” I replied with a soft smile.
“I would like that.” Nick agreed excitedly, “let me just finish my breakfast.”
I served Quin too, it seemed kind of rude if I didn’t and that’s not the kind of precedent that I wanted to set for Nick. Quin kind of helped get Nick ready and then they were ready to leave, “I’ll have him back in the evening.” Quin said.
“Okay. Have fun you two.” I said more to Nick than to Quin. I walked them to the door and while they were entering the elevator Wayne was walking out, glaring at Quin who seemed to be proud.
“What’s going on there?” Wayne asked.
“Surprisingly, Quin wanted to spend some time with Nick.” I answered.
“That is surprising.” Wayne agreed, “I was hoping to invite the both of you for a weekend out but now I guess you’ll have to do.” He smiled.
His mood was different today and it felt as though he had some weird mood swing that I hadn’t noticed before. “I’m not ready though.” I pointed to my messy self.
“I’ll wait.” He said as he gestured if he could enter the house. I moved aside letting him in.
I tried to get ready fast so as not to keep him waiting. “I didn’t know where we were going so I opted for a sundress. I hope it’s appropriate?” I asked.
Wayne held my hands and kissed them, “you look amazing.” He said.
“Let’s go.” Wayne said.
He took me to a fancy restaurant and I felt underdressed. “Stop fidgeting, you look great.” He said.
“You could have told me it was a fancy restaurant and I would have picked something different to wear.” I complained.
“No one will notice you if you stop fidgeting.” Wayne said as he gently squeezed my hand in reassurance.
He got us a table that was close to the window, it was kind of cute as you could see different people pass by. Made me wonder what different people think about their everyday lives.
“What do you want to eat?” Wayne asked.
“I’ll just get a cup of coffee.” I said with a smile.
Wayne ordered for us and once the waiter left, he looked at me, “there is something I have to tell you.” He sighed, “I have been trying to find ways to tell you but it seems like… I really don’t know how to tell you.”
I reached out for his hands, “I’m here for you. You can tell me anything you want to.” I reassured him.
He was about to say something when I heard someone call out my name, “Over here Love.” Cassie said as she asked her friend to follow her.
“Hey Wayne, I see you’re handsome as always.” Cassie said winking at him.
“Glad to see you haven’t changed.” I commented.
“Meet my new friend…”
“Ivy?” I called out.
“Damn! You guys already know each other?” Cassie asked feeling bummed out.
“She’s the one I was telling you about. Quin’s girlfriend.” I explained as I looked at her confused, “she has her hair done just like mine.” I murmured.
“I know right. I thought it was you when I was coming to get coffee at our favorite spot but it wasn’t. It was kind of eerie.” Cassie commented with a chuckle but I wasn't finding this funny.
What exactly were they planning? I wondered as I eyed Ivy. Did Quin put her up to this?
