Chapter 7
I was elated that Duncan decided not to show up for my last class of the day, but with all the whispers, he was still an overwhelming presence in the room. Tales of my vanishing act infiltrated every crevice of the school, to the point that students couldn’t concentrate on their work. Instead, they just leered at me gape-jawed through my lesson.
When the final bell rang, I watched the students fly out of my classroom. Once the room was clear, the loudspeaker crackled to life. “Ms. Freeman to the principal’s office. Ms. Freeman to the principal’s office.”
The students’ eyes burned into me as I trudged to the principal’s office for the second time in as many days.
