Chapter 13

1068 Words
The park was quiet as Chioma left, the twilight settling into a deep, comforting blue. But her mind was anything but calm. The decision to confront Olivia and Alejandro filled her with a sense of resolve, but it also stirred up a storm of emotions she wasn’t sure how to handle. She took the long way home, hoping the walk would help her gather her thoughts, but each step seemed to bring her closer to a confrontation she was dreading. She wasn’t sure what she would say, or how she would react to their explanations. Would she find it in herself to forgive them, or was the damage too deep? When Chioma finally reached her apartment, she noticed a message notification on her phone. It was from Alejandro. She hesitated for a moment before opening it, bracing herself for whatever he had to say.“Chioma, please… I need to talk to you. It’s important.”There was something in his words that made her heart skip a beat—an urgency that suggested there was more to the story than she knew. She wasn’t sure she wanted to hear it, but she knew she had to. With a deep breath, she texted him back, telling him to meet her at the café near her apartment in an hour.As she got ready, Chioma’s mind raced with possibilities. What could Alejandro possibly need to say that hadn’t already been said? Was he going to apologize again, try to explain his actions? Or was there something even worse that he hadn’t told her yet? When she arrived at the café, Alejandro was already there, sitting at a corner table, his face drawn and tired. The sight of him made her heart ache, but she steeled herself, determined to stay strong.“Chioma,” he began as she sat down, his voice low and strained, “there’s something you need to know.”She looked at him, her heart pounding in her chest. “What is it, Alejandro?”He hesitated, clearly struggling to find the right words. “After that night… after Olivia told you… I got a call from someone.”Chioma frowned, confused. “A call from who?”“From Amara,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.Amara. The name hit Chioma like a punch to the gut. She hadn’t thought about her in months—Olivia’s coworker, the one who had always been a little too friendly with Alejandro. A flicker of jealousy sparked in Chioma’s chest, but she forced herself to listen.“What did she want?” Chioma asked, her voice tight.Alejandro looked down at the table, unable to meet her eyes. “She said… she said we slept together.”The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Chioma felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her. “What?” she whispered, her voice shaking.“It’s not true, Chioma. I swear to you, I never… I would never do that to you.” Alejandro’s voice was desperate, pleading with her to believe him. “She’s lying. I don’t know why, but she’s lying.”Chioma stared at him, her mind spinning. She wanted to believe him, she really did, but the doubt that had already taken root in her heart made it hard to trust anything he said. “Why would she lie about something like that, Alejandro? Why now?”“I don’t know,” he said, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “Maybe she found out about what happened between us and Olivia, and she saw it as an opportunity. Maybe she thought she could… I don’t know… drive us apart.”Chioma felt sick to her stomach. She had always known that Amara had a thing for Alejandro, but she had never imagined it would come to this. “Did you… did you do anything to make her think there was something between you?”“No,” Alejandro said firmly, his eyes finally meeting hers. “I swear to you, Chioma, I’ve never given her any reason to think that. I’ve been nothing but professional with her. Whatever she’s saying, it’s not true.”Chioma wanted to believe him, but the betrayal she had already felt from Olivia’s confession made it hard. She had trusted Alejandro with her heart, and now it felt like that trust was slipping through her fingers like sand.“What am I supposed to do with this, Alejandro?” she asked, her voice breaking. “How am I supposed to trust you after everything that’s happened?”Alejandro reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “I know I’ve hurt you, Chioma, and I know I’ve made mistakes. But please, you have to believe me when I say that I love you, and I would never do anything to jeopardize what we have.”Chioma looked down at their joined hands, her heart aching. She could feel his sincerity, the love that still burned between them, but the doubt was there too, lurking in the shadows of her mind.“I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks.Alejandro squeezed her hand, his eyes pleading with her. “Please, Chioma. Don’t let her win. Don’t let this tear us apart.”Chioma closed her eyes, trying to block out the pain, the confusion, the doubt. She wanted so badly to believe him, to believe that they could get through this, but she wasn’t sure if her heart could take any more.“I need time,” she finally said, pulling her hand away from his. “I need time to think.”Alejandro nodded, his face crumpling with pain. “Take all the time you need,” he said softly. “I’ll be here, waiting for you.”Chioma stood up, her legs feeling like jelly beneath her. “I’ll… I’ll call you when I’m ready.”She turned and walked out of the café, her heart heavy with the weight of everything that had happened. As she stepped out into the cool night air, she looked up at the stars, wondering if they had any answers for her.But there were no answers, only more questions. And as Chioma made her way home, she knew that the path ahead would be more difficult than she had ever imagined.
