Chapter Two

A few days had passed since Chioma’s encounter with Alejandro, but the memory of their brief interaction lingered in her mind. She found herself replaying the conversation, wondering what had weighed so heavily on him that day. The way his eyes had shifted between openness and reservation intrigued her, though she tried to push it to the back of her mind. She had more pressing matters to focus on—her thesis, for one.It was late afternoon when Chioma found herself back on campus, heading toward the library. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard. As she neared the library steps, a familiar voice called out her name."Chioma!"She turned to see her friend Laila, a fellow graduate student, hurrying toward her. Laila’s ever-present smile was wide, her curly hair bouncing with each step."Laila! What’s up?" Chioma greeted her with a hug."I was just looking for you. Are you headed to the library?" Laila asked, adjusting the strap of her backpack."Yeah, I’ve got a few hours of work ahead. You?""Same here. But hey, there’s something happening tonight that I think you should come to. It’s a cultural mixer in the student lounge. I heard it’s going to be a great event with music, food, and people from all over. You could use a break," Laila suggested, her eyes twinkling with excitement.Chioma hesitated. "I don’t know, Laila. I’ve got so much to do, and I’m not really in the mood for a crowd.""Come on, you’ll love it! Plus, it’s a good chance to meet new people and maybe even take your mind off your thesis for a bit. You’re always working so hard—you deserve to relax."Chioma smiled at her friend’s enthusiasm. "Okay, okay. I’ll come, but only for a little while.""That’s the spirit! I’ll see you there," Laila said, giving her a quick hug before heading off toward the library.Later that evening, Chioma found herself standing outside the student lounge, the sound of lively music spilling out into the hallway. She took a deep breath and pushed open the door, immediately greeted by the warmth and energy of the gathering. The room was filled with students from different backgrounds, their conversations blending together in a vibrant hum. A DJ was set up in the corner, spinning a mix of Afrobeat, salsa, and reggae, while a long table on the side was laden with dishes from various cultures.Chioma scanned the room, her eyes catching on the colorful decorations and the groups of people chatting and laughing. She had to admit, Laila was right—it was exactly the kind of distraction she needed. As she moved further into the room, she spotted Laila near the food table, waving her over."I’m glad you came!" Laila said, handing Chioma a plate. "Try the jollof rice. It’s amazing."Chioma chuckled and accepted the plate, helping herself to some of the dishes. "You always know how to convince me."They found a spot to sit, and as they ate, Laila introduced Chioma to a few other students. The conversation flowed easily, and Chioma began to relax, enjoying the evening more than she had expected.Halfway through the event, as she was finishing her plate, Chioma noticed a familiar figure across the room. Alejandro was standing near the DJ, deep in conversation with a group of students. He looked different tonight, more relaxed, a genuine smile lighting up his face as he spoke.Laila followed her gaze and nudged her. "Do you know him?"Chioma nodded. "We met the other day. That’s Alejandro. I helped him put up some flyers on campus.""Oh, that’s Alejandro? I’ve heard about him. He’s the president of the cultural awareness group that organized this event. He’s quite the leader, from what I’ve gathered."Chioma found herself watching him for a moment longer before turning back to Laila. "He seemed nice, but a little… I don’t know. Something was bothering him when we met."Laila shrugged. "Maybe he’s just got a lot on his plate. You should go say hi, though. It wouldn’t hurt to make a new friend."Chioma hesitated, but then she saw Alejandro glance in her direction. Their eyes met, and he gave a small wave, clearly recognizing her. Before she could second-guess herself, Chioma stood up and made her way over to him."Chioma, right?" Alejandro greeted her warmly as she approached."Yes, it’s good to see you again, Alejandro," Chioma replied, returning his smile."You too. I didn’t expect to see you here. Are you enjoying the event?" he asked, gesturing to the lively room around them."I am, actually. It’s a nice break from all the work," she admitted."I’m glad. We worked hard to put this together. It’s good to see people enjoying themselves," Alejandro said, his expression softening. There was a brief pause before Chioma spoke again. "You seem more at ease tonight than the last time I saw you. I hope everything’s okay."Alejandro’s smile faltered slightly, but he nodded. "Yeah, things are better. I was just dealing with some personal stuff. But tonight, it feels good to be here, to focus on something positive."Chioma could sense that he didn’t want to delve into whatever had been troubling him, so she let it go. "Well, you’ve done a great job with this event. It’s really impressive.""Thanks, Chioma. That means a lot," Alejandro said, his smile returning. For the next hour, Chioma and Alejandro found themselves talking about everything from their studies to their experiences living in Canada as international students. They discovered that they had more in common than they had initially realized, and the conversation flowed naturally, without the earlier tension. As the night wore on, the crowd began to thin, and the music slowed to a mellow rhythm. Chioma glanced at the time and realized how late it had gotten."I should probably head out," she said reluctantly, feeling the weight of her unfinished work pressing on her mind.Alejandro nodded, though there was a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "Yeah, I should too. But it was really great talking to you tonight, Chioma.""You too, Alejandro. Maybe we can do this again sometime," she suggested, surprising herself with the invitation."I’d like that," he said, his smile warm and genuine. As they parted ways, Chioma couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection with Alejandro that she hadn’t expected. There was something about him that drew her in, something that made her curious to know more. And as she walked back to her apartment through the crisp night air, she realized that meeting Alejandro had sparked a new chapter in her life—one that she was both excited and nervous to explore.Little did she know, that night would be the first of many encounters that would change the course of her life in ways she could never have imagined.
