The Missing Years

Nia sat quietly, trying to make sense of everything Mrs. Vale had told her. For years, she had believed Ethan had deliberately walked away from their life together. Now she was discovering that he had actually tried to reach her.

Still, understanding his fear did not erase her pain.

“He could have found another way,” Nia whispered.

Mrs. Vale nodded. “He eventually came to the same conclusion.”

She explained that Ethan had spent years convincing himself that disappearing was the safest way to protect Nia. But with time, he realized his silence had only left her with unanswered questions and years of heartbreak.

Mrs. Vale then placed an old hospital bracelet on the table.

Nia picked it up carefully. Ethan's name was still visible.

“When was he admitted?” she asked.

“Just before he disappeared.”

“Why was he there?”

“He had been injured.”

Nia's expression changed.

“Was the injury connected to his investigation?”

“We never found enough evidence to prove that.”

Mrs. Vale reached into the drawer again and produced a faded railway ticket.

Nia examined it closely.

“Where was he going?”

“North,” Mrs. Vale replied.

She explained that Ethan had boarded a late-night train carrying a small bag and a folder filled with documents concerning the missing company funds.

“That folder may have contained the evidence he needed,” she said.

But after the train left the station, Ethan vanished again.

“Where did he go?”

Mrs. Vale shook her head.

“We never discovered that.”

Then she pulled out one final item—a sealed envelope.

Nia's breath caught.

“Ethan left this for you.”

Her name was written across the front in handwriting she could never forget.
