Chapter- 6 Justifying Surrogacy:-

Julia and Amber had come back to the hostel after having lunch.They had their internal tests going on but Amber had her concentration lost due to the issues in her personal life. It was for the every first time that Amber was not studying even during the exams.

She had always been the topper in all the other tests she had given. She was a meritorious student, weather in school and college. She had even made it to the merit list of the last and achieved a 100% scholarship. It was due to the scholarship that Amber was able to do her graduation from such a repeated University otherwise her economic condition wasn't good enough to get her to enroll.

Her siblings did not leave Minnesota and you're studying there. Amber was the only ray of hope for them, who would start her law career and put an end to all their miseries.

Amber's thoughts were no different from her family. Amber was immersed in her thoughts when her phone rang and she was a drawn back to reality.

Since her father suffered a heart attack.Her heart beat tended to pace up every time her phone rank. It gave her chills as if the person on the other end of the call wound give her some bad news. But Amber was relieved when she glanced at the phone's screen.

It was the sharon he was calling her. Sharon was her colleague. Amber took a deep breath and picked the call." Hi...Sharon, Hey! Amber I need you do me a favor. "A voice replied to her from the other end.

"Yeah! tell me what is it? Amber asked.

"Umm... actually, I won't be able to make it to the office today. I have been caught up in some urgent work. Could you please go to the office in my place? Immediate drafting is to be done. Please Amber, the boss would grant me leave only if you would agree to come to the office. And you know how grumpy he is. He does not allow leaves so easily. Sharon requested.

" But today is Sunday, "Amber reasoned.

"I know it's your weekly off but please help me Amber. I really have some urgent business to deal with please Sharon pleaded. Amber felt distracted and could not study so she thought of utilizing the time to help her colleague. Also, she believed that it might divert her mind.

" Okay, Sharon... I will go, "She was relieved.

Sharon was delighted that Amber was finally convinced. "Oh thank you so much, Amber. You are sweetheart." She exclaimed.

"That's completely fine Sharon," replied Amber and disconnected the call. Suppressing all her dilemmas and vulnerability deep in her heart. Amber got up to get ready for work. She was pursuing her dreams of becoming a lawyer on a scholarship but to meet her day to day expresses Amber was working part time in a law firm named "John Williams and associated. "

The moment reached the office, Amber was given the task of legal drafting. Instead of completing the task given by her boss. Amber, opened a 15 day old legal draft and began reading through it child in her womb and after delivery, the child was to be handed over to the couple. Once the child is delivered, there is no relationship or communication between the surrogate mother and newborn.

She was to be given a huge amount of money in return, which was clearly mentioned in the contract. Amber was amazed to see that it was a seven- figure amount. It was indeed a big deal for her.

Amber read all the clauses with the utmost attention. She even attempted to read between the lines and comprehend the meaning behind each clause written in the contract. And why wouldn't she?She had also decided to walk on a similar path, after all.

Amber was at her office sitting in her cubicle. She was reading a contract on the computer with the utmost attention. It was an agreement formulated between a surrogate mother and a couple. It was drafted by non other than Amber herself.

She recalled the day when the couple had arrived at their office and put 4th their wish to get a contract famed for them. Amber was taken a back when she learnt about their purpose for coming to the office. Amber's boss, Mr. Johns Williams, had assigned the drafting work to her. Amber had a word with the couple regarding the key points of the contract and made the legal draft.

While she was at it, Amber wondered if a girl could nurture somebody else's baby in her womb and hand over the newborn after the delivery. And all of it was just for money.

The financial conditions at Amber's that day, when Amber came back to the hostel from her work, she could not wait to narrate the whole incidence about the contract to her friend.

Julia, do you know... when a girl becomes a surrogate, she has to carry the child for 9 months within her and then deliver the baby for those who cannot have babies. This has blown my mind since I came to know about such a practice. I mean, who can a girl do that? "Amber elaborated on the process or surrogacy with a tint of surprise in her eyes.

Julia smiled at her friend and replied to her, this is pretty normal nowadays. You are bound to react this way because Amber, you have stumbled upon such practice for the first time, I guess. But having a baby through surrogacy is one of the most common ways to have kids for people facing difficulties in having babies naturally.

Even after her friend tried to normalise the concept of surrogacy for her. Amber was amazed and kept the thinking about the girl who was to become the surrogate mother. She has kind of mixed feeling towards the girls. At one point, Amber was something with her, on the other hand, she was agitated at the girl for choosing to be a surrogate just for money.

Amber always looked down upon the people who took such a step just for money but now the tables had a turned in such a way that Amber was compelled to become a surrogate due to her financial needs. She had now, realised that the most stubborn and worst situations in life must have compelled the other girl to become a surrogate.

The day after she drafted the contract was the one of the most haunting days of her life. It was the day when Amber had received a call from her mother, who informed her that her father had suffered a heart attack. And all of their savings have been exhausted by his treatment. The doctors had advised Amber's dad to take complete bed rest and he was bedridden, he lost his job.

The financial conditions of Amber's house deteriorated with the worst because her dad was the sole breadwinner for her family. For that day onwards, the only thing that used to be the river rate in Amber's mind was money. Amber was always engrossed in her thoughts about how to earn more and more money and rise for this financial debt that her family had fallen into. The only thing that she wanted now was an escape from the drastic situations that she had and her family were trapped in.

During those days, Amber was a finishing the drafting of the surrogacy contract when an idea struck her mind. She is becoming a surrogate to fulfill her family's financial demands. The hefty sum of money that a surrogate was offered had attached Amber in some way. She believed that it wasn't something illegal.

Both parties would get their benefits out of it. She considered it a noble cause where a couple who were not blessed with a child would become parents and Amber would get her share of the money to quench her family's financial issues. The financial aspects of the process of surrogacy had convinced her enough to walk down the same path.

She quickly read through the contract carefully and found the address and contract number of the fertility centre where the couple had contracted to resolve their problem. Amber noted down the address and contact details to be used for the purpose.

And the very next day, she went to the fertility clinic with all the queries on her mind. She went to the clinic to find out what the requirements were for her to become a surrogate mother. She was informed that there were a series of steps involved in the procedure. First of all, she needed to fill out an application form she had to mention in the form that becoming a surrogate was her choice and she was not forced to be one.

Along with the consent form, there was another application form that required her basic details.Once side application was accepted, Amber had to fill out another application form that would take her to the next step of the medical examination.

And the medical checkup would consist of numerous tests that would determine that Amber was healthy enough to convince the baby. If the application was matched with a carry in the fertility centre. She would be contacted by the administration and all the further process would commence then.

Amber had listened to all her of the processes and ruled carefully before filling out the application form and submitted it. She had taken a step forward but her heart was reluctant to somehow accept it. She was stuck in a dilemma not knowing whether she had done the right thing or not.

Amber, when did you come back? Didn't my brother let me know. I was waiting for you silly. Some girl from the first floor informed me that he saw you coming back to the hostel". Julia question." Amber did not answer her query and continued to be mentioned. Julia glanced at her for a moment and inquired again, "what happened baby? you look tired. Are you not keeping well.

Amber was lying on the bed. When she replied to her query, I'm good, just feeling a bit low. Julia was worried to see her friend upset. She said down behind her on the bed." Why...I mean, what happened, Amber?

By that time, Amber had also gotten up.

" Umm... Julia.. I wanted to discuss something important with you, Ambar answered.

Julia smiled at her and stated, "then my dear friend, what are you waiting for? tell me what has been bothering you all this time."

Amber cleared her throat and positioned herself opposite Julia. She clenched both her hands and confessed the truth word for word. Julia had almost collaged in and as a response, she pulled her hands away from her hold getting off the bed, she was fuming with anger as she yelled at Amber, "Are you kidding me. Have you gone nuts? Amber, do you even know what you have just done.

Yes, of course I know very well. I have filled the application form knowing all the pros and cons of the procedure, moreover, I didn't find it wrong in anyway. I just have to carry somebody else's baby in my stomach and then deliver it, handling it over to them.

And Julia, you can't even imagine the amount of money I would be getting in return for it.Amber tried to convince her.

I know it's crazy, but I don't have any other option other than being a surrogate. And you are free to let me know if you have any ideas that could you tell me the other way by which I could solve my money matters? Amber questioned, Julia was frustrated when she realised that her mother did not want to understand anything.

Amber did not answer her query and continues to be motionless. 🤩
