The moment it started…
I knew.
That pull...
That sharp, undeniable tug in my chest,
It wasn’t distant anymore.
It was close.
Too close.
I stood frozen in the middle of the ceremonial hall, my breath uneven, my pulse racing louder than the voices around me.
Every instinct inside me screamed the same thing.
He’s here.
“No…” I whispered under my breath.
That wasn’t possible.
He wouldn’t be reckless enough,
Another sharp wave hit me.
Stronger this time.
It stole the air from my lungs.
Forced my body to react before my mind could catch up.
I turned.
Without thinking.
Without permission.
Toward the forest.
“Selene.” My father’s voice was sharp.
Commanding.
But I didn’t respond.
I couldn’t.
Because the pull wasn’t asking anymore.
It was demanding.
“I need air,” I said quickly, stepping back before anyone could stop me.
Before anyone could question me.
And then,
I ran.
Not like a daughter of Ironfang.
Not like someone bound by rules.
But like something wild.
Something chasing—or being chased by—something it couldn’t escape.
The forest greeted me like it had been waiting.
Silent.
Still.
Watching.
My steps slowed as I moved deeper in, my breathing uneven, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.
“Show yourself,” I whispered.
Silence.
But the pull,
Stronger than ever.
Closer than ever.
Then...
A shift in the air.
And he stepped out.
Like before.
Like he belonged to the shadows themselves.
But this time—
There was no distance between us.
He was closer.
Much closer.
My breath caught instantly.
“You came,” he said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like this was inevitable.
Like he had known I would.
“I didn’t—” I stopped myself.
Because that was a lie.
And we both knew it.
His gaze held mine, steady and intense.
“You felt it.”
I swallowed hard.
“Yes.”
There was no point denying it anymore.
Silence stretched between us.
Heavy.
Charged.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I said finally, forcing the words out.
“They’ll kill you if they find you.”
A flicker of something crossed his face.
Not fear.
Never fear.
“I didn’t come here to hide.”
My heart skipped.
“Then you came here to die?”
He took a step closer.
“No.”
Another step.
“I came here for you.”
My breath faltered.
“You don’t even know me.”
His eyes darkened.
“I don’t need to.”
Another step.
Now there was barely any space left between us.
“That connection—” he continued, his voice lowering, rougher now. “You feel it. The same way I do.”
I shook my head instinctively.
But my body betrayed me.
Again.
“Yes,” I whispered.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Like hearing it out loud changed something.
“This isn’t supposed to happen,” I said.
“You’re right.”
“Then why are you here?” My voice broke slightly now.
A pause.
A real one.
Then...
“Because I can’t stay away.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because I understood that feeling.
Too well.
“You have to,” I said quickly, stepping back now, panic rising. “You don’t understand—this isn’t just about us. If they find you here...”
“I know exactly what happens,” he cut in.
Silence.
“War,” I whispered.
His gaze didn’t waver.
“Then maybe it’s time for one.”
My heart dropped.
“No.”
The word came out stronger than anything I had said before.
“No,” I repeated, shaking my head. “You don’t get to say that like it’s nothing. People will die.”
“And what do you think happens if we ignore this?” he shot back.
I froze.
“Because this—” he stepped closer again, his voice dropping dangerously low, “—this doesn’t go away.”
My breath trembled.
“I’m getting married.”
The words fell between us like a final blow.
For a moment,
He didn’t move.
Didn’t speak.
Then,
Something in him shifted.
Darkened.
“To him?” he asked quietly.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Tense.
Then,
He stepped forward suddenly,
Closing the distance completely.
My back hit the nearest tree before I could react.
My breath caught sharply.
“You’re not his.”
The words were low.
Possessive.
Certain.
My heart pounded violently.
“I am,” I said, even though the words felt wrong now. “It’s already decided.”
His hand came up suddenly, gripping the tree beside my head.
Trapping me without touching me.
“I don’t care what’s decided.”
My pulse spiked.
“You should.”
His eyes locked onto mine.
Burning.
Unyielding.
“Look at me,” he said.
I already was.
“Tell me you don’t feel it,” he continued.
Silence.
Because I couldn’t.
I couldn’t lie anymore.
“Exactly,” he murmured.
And then,
Before I could think,
Before I could stop him,
His hand moved to my chin.
Tilting my face up.
And his lips brushed mine.
Soft.
Barely there.
But it was enough.
Everything exploded.
Heat.
Energy.
Connection.
Stronger than anything before.
A sharp gasp left my lips as my hands instinctively gripped his shirt.
Pulling him closer.
Wrong.
This was wrong.
But I didn’t stop.
Neither did he.
Because in that moment,
Nothing else mattered.
Not the pack.
Not the rules.
Not the war waiting to happen.
Only this.
Only him.
Only us.
A distant shout broke through the moment.
Voices.
Getting closer.
My eyes flew open.
“They’re coming,” I whispered.
His jaw tightened.
But he didn’t move immediately.
Like leaving me was the hardest thing he had ever done.
“This isn’t over,” he said.
My breath trembled.
“I know.”
Another shout.
Closer now.
Reluctantly,
He stepped back.
But his eyes never left mine.
“Next time,” he said quietly, “I won’t stop.”
My heart skipped.
Then,
He disappeared into the forest.
Gone.
Leaving me there.
Breathless.
Shaken.
Changed.
The guards burst through the trees seconds later.
“Lady Selene!”
I turned quickly, forcing my expression back into something controlled.
Something believable.
But it was too late.
Because even as they surrounded me,
Even as they spoke,
All I could feel…
Was him.
And the truth I could no longer deny.
I had just kissed the enemy.
And there was no going back.
