Chapter Four – The Kings Who Bent

1148 Words
Dawn came cold and quiet. Mist hung low over the clearing. Rogues stood in a half circle, tense and alert. No one spoke. No one moved. Sera stood at the front. She did not wear a crown. She did not need one. Across from her, the three kings stepped forward together. Killian’s face was unreadable. Caspian looked calm as ever. Darius carried that same easy expression, though his eyes were serious. Her pack watched closely. “You came back,” Sera said. “We gave our word,” Killian replied. She nodded once. “Then keep it.” A long silence followed. Darius moved first. He stepped forward, then slowly lowered himself to one knee. The clearing shifted. A murmur ran through the rogues. Caspian exhaled softly and followed. One knee pressed to the ground. Head slightly bowed. All eyes turned to Killian. For a moment, he stood still. A king used to obey. A man who commanded armies. Then he bent. His knee hit the earth with quiet force. The rogues stared. Sera did not move. Killian lifted his head, meeting her eyes. “Three years ago, we exiled you without trial. We acted on an incomplete truth. That was a failure.” Caspian spoke next. “We accepted the accusation without proof. That was negligence.” Darius’s voice was steady. “We judged before we investigated. That was wrong.” The words settled over the clearing. Sera felt the weight of them. “You admit it publicly?” she asked. “Yes,” Killian said. “You will repeat it before every pack?” “Yes.” “And you will reopen the case.” Caspian nodded. “Immediately.” She stepped closer, stopping a breath away from Killian. “If you lie again, I will not forgive it.” “You won’t need to,” he replied. She studied him carefully. Searching for pride. For anger. There was none. “Stand,” she said. They rose together. Her wolves still looked stunned. One of them stepped forward. “Why should we trust this?” “You shouldn’t,” Sera answered calmly. “Trust is earned.” She turned back to the kings. “We move to the nearest infected border. I want to see the damage myself.” Killian nodded. “The North is closest.” “Then we go north,” she said. Caspian’s gaze flicked toward her pack. “They travel with us?” “They are my pack,” she replied. Darius smiled faintly. “That was not a complaint.” It took hours to prepare. The rogues packed quickly. The kings’ guards kept their distance, watching but not interfering. When they began the journey, tension followed like a shadow. Sera walked ahead. Killian moved beside her. “You don’t fear walking next to me?” he asked quietly. “I survived worse than you,” she said. His mouth almost curved, but not quite. “Fair.” Behind them, Caspian rode with Darius. “She’s stronger than before,” Darius murmured. “She had to be,” Caspian replied. “And the bond?” Darius asked. Caspian’s expression shifted slightly. “You feel it too.” “Yes.” They both glanced toward her. The pull was there. Quiet but steady. It tightened the closer they walked. Sera felt it. She ignored it. By midday, the air changed. The scent of sickness reached them first. Her pace slowed. Ahead, smoke drifted above the trees. Killian’s jaw tightened. “We’re close.” They entered a small border settlement. Wolves lie on blankets outside wooden cabins. Some coughed weakly. Others stared blankly at the sky. Healers moved between them, faces tired. One woman looked up as the kings approached. Relief flashed across her face. “Alpha,” she breathed. Then she saw Sera. Recognition followed. Whispers spread. “That’s her.” “The rogue.” “The killer.” Sera felt the old sting, but her face remained calm. Killian stepped forward. His voice carried easily. “She is not a killer.” The whispers stopped. “We exiled her without a proper trial,” he continued. “That decision is under review.” Shock rippled through the settlement. Caspian added smoothly, “Focus on the present. The ritual requires her presence. She stands with us.” All eyes turned to Sera. She walked past them without hesitation, kneeling beside a sick boy. His breathing was shallow. “How long?” she asked a healer. “Two days,” the healer said. “He was bitten during patrol.” Sera touched the boy’s forehead. Too hot. “Show me the others,” she said. For the next hour, she moved from one patient to the next. Asking questions. Observing patterns. The kings watched quietly. “She’s not guessing,” Darius murmured. “No,” Killian said. “She’s studying.” Sera finally stood, brushing dirt from her hands. “It spreads through blood contact,” she said. “But it starts in the lungs.” “That matches the scroll,” Caspian replied. She faced them. “The ritual site?” “An old stone circle beyond the ridge,” Killian answered. She nodded slowly. “We perform it at sunset.” The healer hesitated. “Will it work?” Sera looked at the boy again. “It has to.” As preparations began, tension rose again. Caspian approached her quietly. “You stepped into this without fear.” “I am afraid,” she said. He paused. “You don’t look at it.” “I learned not to show it.” Their eyes met briefly. Darius joined them. “Once this begins, there is no turning back.” “I know,” she said. Killian approached last. He stood close enough for her to feel the heat of him. “If you wish to stop, say it now,” he said. She met his gaze without flinching. “I don’t run anymore.” The sun began to sink. Wolves gathered at the edge of the settlement, watching as they walked toward the ancient stones. The circle stood tall and silent. Wind moved through it softly. Sera stepped into the center. The three kings followed. The bond tightened. The air felt charged. Caspian spoke first. “Are you ready?” She looked at each of them. “You bend once,” she said quietly. “Now we see if you stand.” Killian extended his hand. After a brief pause, she took it. Darius and Caspian placed their hands over theirs. Power sparked beneath their skin. The wind rose sharply around the stones. And for the first time in three years, Sera did not feel alone. She felt powerful. Whatever happened next, it would change everything. And this time, she would not be the one cast aside. She would be the center.
