Oxford at last. 17 December 1969.
When the taxi dropped the trio off on Catte Street at the address Emilee had provided, it was almost 5:05 p.m. and completely dark. The mid-December chill immediately settled in as they found themselves next to a tower of luggage at the entrance to Hertford College. The girls were to have their interviews there, as well as find accommodation for the short term.
The moment Emilee noticed the distance from the sidewalk to the front door of the college in the anemic glare of the street lamps, she pleaded with Douglas to help them with their luggage, which consisted of only two large pieces each, she said, plus hand luggage—the extent of their earthly possessions.
