Douglas and Caroline did not disappoint Emilee. They arrived five minutes early. The three friends waited at the bottom of the stairs for the bell tower to chime the hour. Standing there, Emilee pondered their plan to test Connor—perhaps she had lost perspective. For a moment, she felt sorry for him.
“Emilee?”
How did he always manage to sneak up on her?
“Connor.” She stepped forward and took his hand, turning him around. “Meet two of my friends, Douglas Harding and Caroline Washington.”
He nodded in acknowledgment, shook their hands, then took her elbow to steer her away.
Emilee pulled free. “Would you mind if we’re not back by five and rather walk to the coffee shop? With Douglas and Caroline? I would love that.”
