17 The factory floor. July 1971. For four Saturdays in a row, until mid-June at exactly 4 p.m., Connor O’Hannigan had called the Reception of Magdalen College. Each time, Emilee had refused to make an appearance. On the first two Saturdays, he’d left a bushel of red roses accompanied by a letter. The roses immediately ended up in the garbage can, along with the unread letter.
