42 An unfamiliar kindness. Emilee glanced at Connor’s unmoving bundle on the top landing outside the apartment building. Before doing up her own, she kneeled and buttoned up her daughter’s jacket. She scooped the girl into her arms, ignored her throbbing ankle, and set off at a steady, limping pace, following the halos of light down the street. A final glance at the entrance confirmed the huddled figure had started to move. She increased her strides.
