Not Guilty

845 Words

Time stopped and Zach felt the oxygen leave his lungs.  What the hell?  He had to think for a second.  How much does she remember?   “What do you remember?” He asked too quickly.   He didn’t mean to sound harsh but his whole world just flipped.  This was his friend’s daughter.  Last time he laid eyes on her she was a child.  He had been taking care of her business for years but had not made any effort to see her.  She had grown into a woman.  He wanted to feel ashamed.  He waited to feel guilt, or something similar that he should feel, but nothing like that came.  He still wanted her.     Silence hung between them.  She stood and shuffled from one foot to the other, still holding her coffee.  He thought about last night and wonder how she could forget what they did to each other.
