The Big Bad Boss

••••••Sam POV•••••• “Ugh!” I slammed the folder closed. It had been an hour and I still couldn’t concentrate on the words in front of me. After bumping into Ms. Eastbrook I had been distracted from the work that sat on my desk taunting me. I pressed my button to summon my secretary. Not more than a minute later Cassidy Winchester walked in carrying another stack of folders and I couldn’t hide the aggravated sigh that escaped my lips. “Mr Turner, sir.” she said after closing the door and standing waiting for my instructions. “What are those in your hand?” I asked mostly as a distraction to keep her here longer. She smiled a coy smile knowing I was trying to keep from doing the work in front of me. “If your looking for a distraction sorry sir these are more papers that need your signature so I can email them to the advertising companies for their approval.” I looked from the papers in her hand to the ones on my desk and put my head in my hands. When I started this company I wanted to show my dad that I didn’t have to be part of the family business to be successful and I definitely didn’t need his money to support my dreams. 5 years ago I started in a run down storage room with a couple of people to help to now having a 10 floor building in Manhattan with over 100 employees. I always loved how Hugh Hefner started his magazine with next to nothing but a dream which is now a very real Playboy empire and I was determined to do the same. I may not have bunnies but my magazine has everything from music to the latest trends, world awareness and best vacations for a steal, even how to organize your life. The readers, mostly college kids on a budget love it so much even their parents buy our online blog to keep up with their kids . I pride myself knowing that I’m bringing conversations that both young adults and parents can feel involved in. Something I wish I had growing up in my household. My secretary Cassidy has been with me from the beginning, she was one of the workers who helped build this company and one of the only people here I could almost consider a friend. “Let me get you some coffee looks like you’ll need it” she left the folders on a nearby table and went back out the door. I didn’t even look up until I opened my eyes and saw a cup of black coffee sitting right under my nose on the desk. I looked up in confusion , I didn’t even hear her open or close the door back. She stood there hands folded and waiting for me to look up. Her eyes showed a hint of sadness. “Mr. Turner sir, I know it’s none of my business but of the 5 years I’ve known you you’ve always been the first here and last to leave. It’s not good for your health and you should really take it easy or you could be knocking on death’s door sooner than you think.” she ended with her voice almost above a whisper. I knew her father died at the age of 42 and she never got over it. The doctor said he died of exhaustion and his heart just gave out. I smiled a small smile and said, “Thank you Ms. Winchester for your concern. I’ll keep it in mind” She looked in my eyes, saw my sincerity and gave a firm nod. She bowed a little and went back out the door with a soft click. Instead of just going back to work like I would have normally done. I grabbed the coffee cup and carefully walked over to the floor to ceiling windows. I took a tentative sip as my eyes wandered over the busy streets. Fifth Avenue was always busy with the hustle of New York City’s Manhattan residents walking to and from work while visitors or most likely tourist made videos for their social media and took pictures by the bars and restaurants. I casually started to watch a family come out of one of the restaurants. I saw the woman and a young girl holding hands while a man in a suit had his arm over the ladies shoulder. I watched as the little girl ran around to hold her arms up to her dad. The man smiled a huge smile and lifted the girl up in the air twirling her in a circle. The lady laughed at her husbands childish antics when he pulled her into a kiss and dipped her backwards. I began to smile as I watched the little girl grabbed her mom hands when it was time to leave. The man must have had a break from work deciding to eat an early dinner with his family before putting them in a cab and waving as they pulled off. If only I could learn to balance my life that well he chuckled to himself. I found myself daydreaming of a special someone and what could be, losing track of time. As the sun began to fade I checked my watch and saw it was only 6 pm. I went to sit back behind my desk , sitting the cup down. He started to think about what Cassidy said about him working himself to death. I turned my body parallel to the desk stretching my long legs out. I looked down at my shoes and saw a little scruff mark on the top of my left shoe. I chuckled thinking about Ms. Eastwood and her silly joke about my having some type of ‘tweeter fingers’. He thought about her wide doe eyes and how the brown reminded him of warm hot chocolate, her full pink lips that wouldn’t stop rambling when she was caught off guard and how her soft body felt when it crashed into my own. Forget this. I decided to call it an early evening. Obviously my mind wasn’t focused enough to do any work so I called the one person who could loosen me up. ring, ring, ring “Well , well , well. I must be going crazy because I never thought I’d hear from you unless I made an appointment “ “ Ha, ha. Very funny little bro. Hey, wanna go out for drinks” “Oh I’m definitely dead but name the time and place and I’ll make sure my ghost is present” I shook my head at him, not able to hold back my smirk. “ 8 o’clock, Mission” “See ya there bro” click. I grabbed my keys and suitcase with my most important files and headed out the door. Most of the staff was already gone since it was a weekend. I’m only 25 years old and it’s time for me to start living my life. Time for me to to start my own mission.
