••••••Rachel POV••••••
“Rachel, the boss needs these copies by lunch.”
I flinched as the big stack of files landed on my desk with a big thunk. I blew the stray hair that made its way out of my hair tie up out my face.
“Sure Cassidy, no problem” I said while eyeing the clock that said I only had about 45 minutes to lunch. Cassidy gave me an apologetic smile right before she made her way back into the meeting room to take notes and cater to the big heads who run the magazine company they’re currently trying to expand. It’s been the talk of the office for the past 3 months and Rachel and the rest of the people on her floor have felt the pressure from the increased work load. She is an editor to the new company that started about 5 years ago and they have grown from a start up to one of the top competitors in the Azbee Awards. The awards recognize outstanding work by magazines and digital media — websites, e-newsletters, digital magazines, social media and blogs. At first she thought it would be like 13 going on 30. One of her favorite childhood movies about a girl who edits for a major magazine company and gets to fall in love while staying true to herself. Boy did reality have something different in mind. After graduating from the small college in her hometown, she left her adoptive guardians to purse her dream. She moved to New York and scraped her way from an intern to the most respected editor of They magazine. Unfortunately, the work doesn’t leave much room for romance. With a sigh, she got up and made her way to the copy room. I guess I’ll be taking a late lunch she thought to herself, her tummy gurgling in protest. After an hour she was done and made her way to Cassidy’s desk right in front of the boss’ office.
“Done already? This is why I love you” , Cassidy playfully smiled and reached for the folders.
“It’s no problem, gives me reason to stretch my legs and rest my brain from staring at the screen all day.” , I replied.
At that moment my stomach made a loud grumble and I put a hand over my tummy as if to silence it.
“Well I think that’s my cue for lunch. See you later Cass.” , I turned and threw a smile and wave at my good friend of the past 2 years.
“See you after work Rachel, we’re still going out for drinks later before you leave right ?” Cassidy called after me.
“Yeah , yeah! Can’t leave my bestie for a week without a proper celebration “ I cheesed and threw a wink as the elevator door was closing. I pressed the button to the lobby and waited to descend. I started to think about my trip back to my home town after this weekend. I took the rest of the days off this week ,being that it’s Friday ,and will be leaving Sunday afternoon. I smiled as I thought about my aunt and uncle. I couldn’t wait to see them again after 2 years even though they made sure to call me every week sometimes more than the days combined. My aunt Lily was always so protective of me and if uncle Ron didn’t reel her in I’m sure she would have been in the suitcase when I first arrived in New York. I smiled at the thought right when the elevator doors opened. Still in my thoughts I started to get off the elevator only to bump into someone who was walking fast with their head down typing into a phone.
“Ahhh! Hey ! Watch where your going twitter fingers! ” I said as catch my balance from my heel threatening to turn my ankle. If wasn’t knocked off balance already I would have been on the floor after I raised my gaze just to look right into the most emerald green eyes I’ve ever seen. The emerald green eyes of my boss. gulp.
