CHAPTER 5

Axel’s pov I ignored them. Their words were noise, nothing more. I wasn’t interested in why Karla did what she did or how she felt about it. She wasn’t my choice. She was chosen for us. If she didn’t want to accept that, it was her problem. But even as I thought that, my eyes drifted to her. She was still unconscious, her breathing shallow. She looked peaceful, like she didn’t have a care in the world. It was strange to think that this quiet, fragile girl had stood before everyone and rejected us with such boldness. “Axel, say something,” Alaric said suddenly, turning to me. “You’re the eldest. What do we do about this?” “Nothing,” I said without looking at him. “Nothing?” he repeated, his voice rising. “She rejected us, Axel. Publicly! How can we just let that go?” “What do you want me to do, Alaric?” I asked, finally meeting his eyes. “Force her to accept us? Drag her in front of everyone and make her say yes? If she doesn’t want us, that’s her choice.” “She’ll regret it,” Alaric muttered, clenching his fists. “She’s already regretting it,” Lysander said softly. “Look at her. Passing out like this—it’s because the bond is hurting her. She’ll come around when she feels the pull.” Kai laughed harshly. “The pull? Please. She doesn’t deserve to feel it. Let her suffer. Maybe that’ll teach her not to bite the hand that feeds her.” “Enough,” I said, my voice sharp. They all fell silent, looking at me. “This doesn’t change anything. Karla isn’t important. If she wants to reject us, let her. It’s her loss, not ours.” For a moment, no one spoke. Then Alaric nodded slowly. “You’re right. She’ll see what she’s missing soon enough.” Lysander didn’t say anything, but he looked uneasy. Kai just smirked and crossed his arms. I turned back to the window, hoping they would leave me alone. I didn’t want to think about Karla anymore. But as I stared at the stars, I couldn’t stop the question from creeping into my mind. Why did she do it? Why would she reject us, knowing what it would mean? I shook my head and pushed the thought away. It didn’t matter. Karla didn’t matter. She was just an omega, a weak girl who thought she could defy the royal family. If she wanted to throw away her chance at being part of something greater, that was her decision. And yet, as I sat there listening to the soft sound of her breathing, I couldn’t help but feel that this wasn’t the end of the story. Karla had made her choice, but the bond wasn’t so easily broken. Whether she wanted it or not, she was tied to us. And sooner or later, she would have to face that. For now, though, I would let her sleep. Let her dream. Because when she woke up, reality would be waiting for her. And so would we. The door opened with my mother entering as we all bowed to her while she stood at the foot of the bed of the girl. She was visibly worried. “Mum, do you want to sit?” I tried to stand as she shook her head. “Don’t offer me your seat. I’ll soon be gone,” she said. She was more worried about karla than anything else. I held my breath as I watched her walk to the woman and touch her cheek. “She must have been through a lot,” my mother said as I shook my head. “Or maybe she just doesn’t want to be with us. It shouldn’t be a surprise. I mean, she isn’t on our level.” She looked at me with a frown. “Don’t you dare say that about the mate you all will soon have.” I scoffed. “I don’t want to be mates with that.” “Me neither,” Kai said. “She might be our mates according to that seer but she isn’t our mate.” “The same way she chose to reject us is the same way I choose to reject her,” I said while leaning back in my seat. A knock on the door interrupted us before mother could say anything to us as a maid entered with a nod. “The healer is here to see the princes.” I shrugged and stood up. I was tired being here anyway. We walked out of the room to get into the garden where she was waiting for us as I sat down with my brothers. “Nice of you to join me,” the healer said with a smile. “What do you want healer?” “I saw a revelation on you four,” she said as I muttered. “Here we go again.” “You will all soon have a mate.” “Thanks for stating the obvious,” I said. “Anything else?” I hated prophecies. They made me sick and to be honest I didn’t care about anything they had to When we were born, the healer made a prophecy about us. It wasn’t a normal blessing. It was more like a warning. She said we might never find a mate. The Moon Goddess had made us special, but that came with a price. If she had mercy, we would only be able to have one mate. One single mate for all four of us. It was strange, but we accepted it. “I think that has been established. We all have mates now. She’s in the room sleeping.” “That’s not all,” she said before she added something else, something we didn’t expect. “There’s a catch,” she said, her voice trembling a little. “Your mate… she can reject you.” The room went silent. “But,” she added quickly, “she can only reject you if she hates you. Not just dislike or fear, but a deep hatred. If she truly cannot stand to be in the same room as you, she can break the bond.” This was strange. Why didn’t we know of this before? Karla was supposed to be our mate. The Moon Goddess chose her for us. She was the one who could complete the bond, the one who could make us stronger.
