The words struck deeper than any blade.
Alina felt something inside her snap—
like a locked memory shaking its chains.
“I promised you…?” she whispered.
“Yes,” Kael said.
“You chose me.”
“That’s enough!” Rafe shouted, stepping between them.
“Why?” Kael asked. “Because she’s starting to remember I was the one she loved first?”
Rafe’s breath hitched—but he didn’t deny it.
Alina stared at Rafe.
“Is… is that true? That I loved him?”
Rafe’s expression broke.
He looked away.
“Yes,” he said quietly.
“Kael was your first bond.”
“And you?” she asked softly.
“What were you to me?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“I… loved you silently. From the distance I was allowed.”
Kael scoffed.
“He wanted you but never had the courage. I did.”
“That’s because you manipulated her!” Rafe snapped.
“I fought for her,” Kael countered.
“You hesitated.”
Alina felt dizzy—torn between two truths she couldn’t fully remember.
“So… the two of you were fighting over me while I was dying?”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Rafe closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Alina took a step back.
“I don’t want to remember this.”
“You have to,” Kael said.
“If you don’t choose now… the mark will choose for you.”
“What does that mean?” she asked.
Kael’s eyes glowed.
“It means the one your soul recognizes… will be the one you’re bound to again.”
Rafe stiffened.
Alina’s heart pounded.
Destiny was pulling her in two directions—
one familiar, one safe—
but both dangerous.
