TRIGGER WARNING: SELF HARM ༺═────────────═༻ Irina burst through the door, the weight of whispers and rumors heavy in her chest. She'd heard the snippets, the hushed tones, the pointed glances: Shane and Dimitri, hanging out, laughing, close. The rumors of Seth's infidelity, a betrayal that had cut deep into Shane's heart. She had raced to her best friend's apartment, desperate to offer comfort, to be there for her. The scene that greeted her was chaos. Shattered glass crunched under her feet, the remnants of a vase that had seen better days. The air hung thick with the scent of dust and something else, something sharp and metallic. On the bed, a figure lay huddled beneath a blanket, a tableau of quiet suffering. “Shane?” Irina's voice was a whisper, a fragile thing in the hushed room. No answer. Irina walked closer, her hand reaching out to the blanket's edge. As she drew it back, a gasp escaped her lips. The sight that met her eyes was brutally heartbreaking. Shane's slender body was a canvas of fresh wounds, the lines of cuts shallow but stark against her pale skin. Blood, dark and drying, crusted around the edges, a testament to the pain she had endured. “Shane?” Irina tried again, this time with a tremor in her voice. Finally, Shane stirred, her eyes fluttering open. “Irina?”She spoke in a gruff whisper, her voice ragged and hoarse. “What happened?” Irina asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Shane recounted the events, her voice cracking with each detail, each painful memory. Seth's betrayal, the crushing weight of his lies, the desperate yearning for escape. The words flowed like a torrent, washing over Irina, the pain of her friend's heartbreak echoing in her own chest. “Oh, my baby...” Irina reached out, taking Shane's hand in hers, the warmth of her touch a small beacon in the darkness. “I don't understand... why would he do that? He knew how much I love him... why?” Shane shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks, mirroring the wetness on Irina's own face. “I don't know,” she choked out, her voice thick with emotion. Irina pulled Shane into a hug, the warmth of her embracing a silent promise of support. “We're going shopping, okay?” she said softly, her voice firm despite the tremor that ran through it. “Go change.” Shane nodded, her eyes puffy, her face pale. She retreated into the bathroom, her reflection staring back at her. “When did you become like this?” she whispered to herself, the words barely audible. She changed into comfortable clothes, a loose sweater and jeans, her sunglasses shielding her red-rimmed eyes. As they walked through the mall, Shane's eyes caught sight of Dimitri. A smile bloomed on her face, a beacon of unbridled joy that had been absent for so long. “Dimitri!” He turned, his smile warm and genuine. “Hey,” he greeted her. Irina observed them both, her heart clenching slightly. He smiled at Shane, his eyes lingering on her, and she noticed a faint blush creeping up her friend's neck. “Ehem,” Irina cleared her throat, her voice a touch sharp. “You are?” Dimitri shifted his gaze to Irina, a polite smile on his face. “Dimitri Sergvev,” he said, extending a hand. “Shane's project partner. You are?” “Irina,” she replied, shaking his hand, “her best friend.” He nodded, his smile widening. They continued shopping, but Irina found herself slowly withdrawing. She witnessed the light in Shane's eyes, the joy she hadn't seen in weeks, and a pang of something akin to jealousy stabbed at her heart. She excused herself, claiming an emergency. The lie, spun on the fly, was a small act of selfishness, a way to protect her friend from the pain of a past she hadn't entirely escaped. As time went on, Shane seemed to heal, the wounds both physical and emotional slowly fading. Dimitri was a constant presence, the laughter they shared filling the void that had been left by Seth's betrayal. Slowly, Shane allowed herself to be happy again, the memory of Seth fading into the background, replaced by a new, hopeful future. ༺═────────────═༻ Shane went home alone, waving goodbye to Dimitri at the corner. The quiet of her house pressed in on her, a familiar weight she’d learned to carry. She sighed, climbing the stairs, the familiar creak of the steps a lullaby to her loneliness. Her phone buzzed. “Thank you for earlier. It was fun,” the message read, Dimitri’s name flashing on the screen. A smile bloomed on her face. “Thank you too. I had fun,” she replied, her fingers typing quickly. A rush of warmth spread through her, a feeling she hadn’t experienced in a long time. “Can we walk together at school tomorrow?” “Yeah! Sure. I’ll wait for you at the gate.” “Cool. I gotta go. Goodnight bub.” “Goodnight, Dimitri. :)” She tucked her phone into her pocket, the warmth lingering. She walked towards the bathroom, the mirror reflecting her back. The cuts on her arms, stark against her pale skin, were a stark reminder of the darkness she kept hidden inside. A wry smile touched her lips. “What a pity,” she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. She looked at her reflection, her eyes hard and cold. “I’ll show you what you have lost, Seth.” A/N: I got busy lol
