Story:
The crypt beneath Ravensbrook was colder than Lena had imagined. The walls, carved with ancient runes, seemed to pulse faintly, as if alive. Isaac held a lantern, the flickering light barely cutting through the oppressive darkness.
“This is where it all started,” Isaac said, his voice heavy with dread. “The first pact. The beginning of everything.”
Lena ran her fingers over the runes, the symbols strangely familiar, as though they’d been etched into her very soul. “It feels alive,” she whispered, her breath visible in the frigid air.
The air grew heavier with each step they took deeper into the crypt. Whispers echoed around them, disembodied voices speaking a language Lena couldn’t understand.
“They’re the voices of the cursed,” Isaac said, his eyes darting nervously. “The ones who were sacrificed to the entity.”
Lena swallowed hard. “We’re going to end this,” she said, more to convince herself than Isaac.
As they reached the central chamber, the lantern flickered and dimmed. The room was vast, its ceiling lost in shadow. In the center was an altar, its surface stained dark with what Lena could only assume was blood. Around it, statues of robed figures loomed, their faces obscured but their postures menacing.
“This is it,” Isaac said, his voice barely a whisper.
Lena placed the ritual items on the altar: the mirror, the dagger, and a vial of her own blood, as instructed by Edith. She felt a chill run down her spine as the air seemed to thrum with energy.
“The elders said the ritual would bind the entity forever,” Isaac said. “But they didn’t tell us the cost.”
Lena turned to him, her eyes searching his face. “What do you mean?”
Isaac hesitated. “The crypt... it was built to trap the entity, but also to feed it. The bloodline sacrifices were never just to keep it at bay. They were to strengthen it. If we perform this ritual... it won’t just bind it. It’ll destroy it. But it’ll take everything we have to do it.”
“Everything?” Lena asked, her voice trembling.
Isaac met her gaze, his expression pained. “It’ll take both of us.”
Before Lena could respond, the air in the chamber grew icy. A low growl echoed around them, and the shadows began to writhe. The entity materialized before them, its form a grotesque mass of darkness and shifting faces.
“You dare return to my heart?” it hissed, its voice layered with a thousand others. “You think you can destroy me?”
Lena stepped forward, her fear giving way to anger. “You’ve tormented this town, my family, for centuries. It ends here.”
The entity laughed, a sound that made Lena’s skin crawl. “You cannot end me, child. I am the darkness in your blood, the shadow in your soul. You are mine, as is he.”
The entity extended a tendril of shadow toward Isaac, who cried out in pain as it wrapped around him.
“No!” Lena shouted, rushing forward.
The ritual began almost instinctively, the words spilling from Lena’s lips as though they had been etched into her memory. The runes on the walls flared to life, casting the chamber in an eerie glow.
The entity writhed, its form distorting as the power of the ritual took hold. But it fought back, its tendrils lashing out at Lena and Isaac.
“You cannot destroy me without destroying yourselves,” it roared.
Isaac, still struggling against the shadows holding him, turned to Lena. “You have to finish it,” he said, his voice strained. “No matter what happens to me.”
Lena shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I won’t lose you.”
“You won’t have a choice,” Isaac said, his voice soft but resolute.
The entity’s power surged, and the chamber began to shake. The statues cracked, pieces falling to the ground as the crypt threatened to collapse. Lena gripped the dagger, her hands trembling as she stared at Isaac.
“Lena,” he said, his eyes locking onto hers. “I love you. That’s why I have to do this.”
Before Lena could stop him, Isaac wrenched himself free from the shadows and stepped onto the altar. He took the dagger from her and plunged it into his own chest.
“No!” Lena screamed, rushing to him as the ritual’s energy exploded around them.
The entity let out an ear-splitting scream as it was pulled into the mirror, its form twisting and breaking apart. The mirror glowed brightly, then shattered, sending shards flying across the chamber.
When the light faded, Lena knelt by Isaac’s side, his body still and lifeless.
“Isaac,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “You can’t leave me. Not like this.”
As tears fell onto his face, a faint glow began to emanate from his chest. Isaac’s eyes fluttered open, and he gasped for air.
“Lena?” he said weakly.
She threw her arms around him, relief flooding through her. But as she held him, she noticed something was wrong. His eyes glowed faintly, and his voice carried a strange echo.
“The entity isn’t gone,” he said, his voice a mixture of his own and something darker. “It’s inside me now.”
Lena pulled back, her heart sinking. “What do you mean?”
Isaac looked at her, his expression filled with both love and fear. “I can hold it back... for now. But it’s only a matter of time before it takes over completely.”
