💼 Chapter 5: The Truth Between Us

626 Words
Sleep had abandoned Ethan completely. For nights, he sat in his office — the same one Amara placed beside hers — digging through encrypted files, hidden records, and buried reports from five years ago. The deeper he looked, the more he realized… something had never added up. The scandal that ruined Amara — the leaked documents, the false accusations — all carried traces of someone else’s hand. Someone inside his company. Someone who had wanted her gone. And Ethan… had unknowingly helped them do it. --- By morning, he stormed into Amara’s office without knocking. She looked up from her laptop, clearly annoyed. “Do you even understand the concept of knocking?” He ignored her tone and dropped a folder on her desk. “Look at this.” She frowned, flipping through the papers. “What is this supposed to be?” “Proof,” Ethan said tightly. “That you were set up.” Her eyes narrowed. “Don’t—” “Listen to me!” he cut her off, voice rough. “You think I destroyed you out of greed, but I didn’t. Someone inside my team framed you — used me to do it. I just didn’t see it then.” Amara’s expression didn’t change, but her hand trembled slightly as she turned another page. The documents were clear — transactions, forged emails, deleted communications — all pointing to one person. Lucas Tan, Ethan’s former business strategist. The same man who had once been Amara’s mentor. “He leaked the confidential files,” Ethan continued. “Then he made it look like you sold company data. I confronted you before checking the evidence. And when you refused to explain, I believed him.” Amara’s eyes glistened — anger and pain mixing into something raw. “So you’re saying… all this time, I was innocent?” Ethan’s chest tightened. “You always were.” The silence that followed was unbearable. Only the rain outside filled the room — a reminder of that night years ago when everything fell apart between them. --- Amara stood up slowly, closing the folder. “Why are you showing me this now?” “Because you deserve the truth,” he said softly. “And because I’m done letting lies control us.” Her eyes met his — guarded, confused, vulnerable. “You expect me to forgive you after everything?” “No,” Ethan whispered. “I just want you to know I would take it all back if I could.” For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then Amara stepped closer — too close. He could feel her breath, her heartbeat, the pain that still lingered between them. “You broke me once, Ethan,” she said, voice shaking. “And you’re still the only one who can do it again.” His throat tightened. “Then maybe it’s time I fix what I destroyed.” She looked away quickly, blinking away the tears that threatened to fall. “You can’t fix everything with guilt,” she said quietly. “But maybe… you can start by helping me take him down.” Ethan froze. “Lucas?” She nodded. “If he used both of us, I want justice. And I want it done my way.” Their eyes met again — this time not as enemies, but as allies bound by truth, regret, and something dangerously close to love. --- That night, as they planned their next move, Ethan realized something: His empire might never return, his power might be gone, but working beside Amara — fighting for her, protecting her — made him feel alive again. And maybe, just maybe, his downfall wasn’t the end. It was the beginning of his redemption.
