The Pursuit Begins

338 Words
The rest of the evening passed in a blur. Elara couldn’t seem to focus on anything other than the weight of Thorn’s words. The prophecy, the Aether, and the truth about her parents—everything she had known about her life seemed to crumble before her eyes. The pieces of her past didn’t fit anymore. Her mind drifted as she sat in the corner of the tavern, staring into her half-drunk mug of water. The sound of laughter and clinking glasses seemed distant, like it belonged to someone else’s life. Thorn had been strangely quiet since their conversation, his eyes often darting to the door, his fingers drumming lightly on the edge of the table. She could sense the urgency in him now—the knowledge that time was running out. “We need to move,” Thorn said suddenly, breaking the silence. His voice was hard. “You’re not safe here.” Elara blinked, her thoughts snapping back to the present. “Safe? From what?” He stood up and grabbed his cloak, his face hardening. “There are people who know you’re here. They’ll come for you soon. And when they do, they’ll bring more than just cloaked shadows.” Elara felt a chill wash over her. She had thought the tavern would be a safe haven, but now it felt like a trap. “Where do we go?” she asked, her heart pounding in her chest. Thorn glanced at her, his eyes steady. “We get to the docks. I have a contact there who can help us. But we need to move quickly. And don’t trust anyone who offers you help—not yet. Not until we know who’s really after you.” Elara didn’t question him. There was no time for that now. She stood up, feeling the weight of the scroll at her side once more, and followed Thorn out into the night. As they slipped into the shadows, Elara couldn’t shake the feeling that the real journey was just beginning.
