Alexa felt taken aback as Lanzo released his hold on her and leaned back into his seat, still with his eyes on hers the entire time.
Was Lanzo kidding about wanting to help her?
Was this all just some kind of sick game he was playing to lower her guard?
Before Alexa could open her mouth to ask him anything, Lanzo quickly reached out and placed his outstretched finger over the top of her soft lips in an attempt to immediately silence her.
He needed to warn her.
Frowning, Alexa clearly got the intended message as he then retracted his hand and held up his phone for her to read the text still displayed on his screen.
It appeared to be a message intended for her.
Alexa was beyond confused right now as she looked between the screen and Lanzo for a few seconds in hesitation.
What the hell was he doing?
Why would he want to help her?
Glancing towards the front of the car, Alexa checked to see if they were currently being watched by the two other men travelling along with them in the front end of the vehicle.
Luckily there appeared to be a tinted divider window separating her and Lanzo from the two passengers up front, so they at least had a little bit of momentary privacy.
Still, she wondered why Lanzo was so worried about her talking to him.
What was the big deal?
Turning back to the phone which was still held up for her, Alexa then began to quickly scan the writing displayed for her on the screen.
Surprisingly, she couldn’t believe what it was that he had written for her…
‘Car is wired. They can hear us. Use text to talk.’
Glancing up from the screen to him once more, Alexa looked uncertain of whether or not she should choose to trust him.
After all, Lanzo was Vincenzo’s nephew by blood.
But something, call it a look in his eye told Alexa that she could trust him in this particularly strange and unforeseen instance.
Try as she might, she couldn’t quite explain it. All she knew was that Lanzo was being totally honest with her right now.
That he genuinely wanted to help her escape from his uncle.
Why, she had no clue.
And even more worrying, how could he possibly help her escape?
As Alexa continued to watch him closely, Lanzo began to type another text.
Both his thumbs tapped away at a tremendous speed, up until he finally lifted the phone up for her to see again…
‘Was my uncle serious about you being his wife?’
An unsettling feeling of dread rose up from within as Alexa looked from the text up to Lanzo’s concerned frown and nodded her head as a silent response to to the question he had asked.
Reaching out, she took the phone from him and typed away before holding it out for Lanzo to read this time…
‘Bastard tricked me into it. Said he had Alessandro.’
Lanzo let out an irritated sigh, as if he had believed his uncle capable of doing something so terribly insidious.
And in truth, that was exactly the case.
He typed away, holding it up...
‘Your son is safe. He’s with Roberto and Willow.’
Alexa smiled, apparently thrilled to hear the happy news about her son’s whereabouts, at long last.
Now she could stop worrying that something might have happened to him and just focus on getting herself free from her kidnappers.
Angered by his uncle’s actions, Lanzo shook his head in silence for a moment as he lowered his phone down to the car seat in a huff.
Although he hadn’t really known his uncle for most of his life and for good enough reason, Lanzo had also heard about Vincenzo’s lack of empathy and greedy nature from others in the past.
He had heard many stories involving Vincenzo.
And now, this proved his fears about his uncle were in fact true.
Don Moroni was the type of man who would do whatever it took to get whatever he wanted.
He clearly had no concern of who got hurt in the process.
Exhaling a breathy sigh, Lanzo then refocused on what needed to be done in the here and now.
Alexa needed help getting clear of these madmen who had taken her against her will.
Even if one of those madmen was his very own uncle.
Reaching back underneath his jacket, he suddenly pulled out a gun from its holster, causing Alexa to gasp and wriggle backwards from him until she was hard up against the car door.
But Lanzo was quick to hold up both his hands, including the hand holding onto the gun, now in a form of surrender.
He needed Alexa to know that he had no intention of harming her.
He made sure to hold the gun as harmlessly as possible, with his thumb and pointer finger pinching at the end of the handle as he held it out slowly towards her.
For her.
Baffled by this, Alexa’s eyes narrowed as she looked from the gun back to him in question.
Nodding his head, Lanzo’s eyebrows lifted as he continued holding it out for her to take from him as the car bumped along the endless roads around them.
Pursing her lips together nervously, Alexa slowly reached out for the weapon and grasped it before giving it a once over scan with her warm brown eyes.
Lanzo was busily typing away yet again when he eventually finished and held up his phone to reveal another secretive message for her…
‘We need to create a distraction.’
With the gun in hand and nodding her head in agreement, Alexa waited for him to type his next message.
Perhaps he already had an idea in mind.
But as he held out his phone and she read the next words displayed there for her, Alexa’s heart plummeted as she frowned in shock at what it said…
‘You need to shoot me.’
Vigorously shaking her head from side to side, Alexa seemed hesitant on committing such a crime as Lanzo rolled his eyes and typed away again.
Alexa was in a state of disbelief.
How in the hell could he possibly want her to shoot him?
Was he out of his mind?
There had to be some other way to create a distraction. Maybe she could shoot both the driver and passenger instead?
No...
Realisation that they would probably crash as a direct result of such an action came to mind and Alexa sighed. As she did, Lanzo held up his phone displaying a new message…
‘One clean shot, through and through. I’ll show you where.’
With that, Lanzo reached out and grabbed Alexa’s hand which was still holding onto the gun.
Initially she gasped in shock. Eventually however, she allowed him to navigate her hand.
Lanzo guided the gun over the top of his left leg and stopped to aim the end of the gun’s nozzle directly over the outer edge of his left upper thigh.
Luckily for them, Lanzo knew a lot about the human body and that included where it would be least dangerous for him to be shot.
As long as it was precise.
Any further over than this and her shot would hit his Femoral Artery.
If that were the case, Lanzo would bleed out within a matter of a minute!
They needed Alexa’s escape to look as convincing as possible if they were to fool Vincenzo.
With steady hands, he held the nozzle in place while using his free hand to cover over the top of hers.
As Lanzo held her hand in his, he could feel as Alexa’s hand began to tremble slightly with fear and obvious hesitance about shooting him like this.
But Lanzo was fully dedicated to going through it.
He looked her in the eye one last time and nodded his approval whilst mouthing something to her.
‘DO IT.’
With her heart raging heavily over and over within her chest, Alexa’s breathing suddenly began to increase in speed and ferocity as she focused on building up enough courage to go through with this indecent act against someone who was simply trying to help her.
Furrowing her brows together in disdain, she looked to him one last time before she glanced down and moved her finger to hover over the trigger.
Swallowing away any remaining nerves and gathering together all of her courage, Alexa held her breath and squeezed the trigger.
‘BANG!’
“Argh!”
Lanzo let out a mangled cry of pain and frustration as he moved both his hands to cradle his upper thigh, now seeping with warm, crimson blood.
It looked like he was really putting some effort into his performance now as he hunched over and hissed, squeezing both his eyes shut to focus on his breathing.
Then again, maybe it wasn’t entirely an act after all.
“f**k…” he made sure to curse as loud as he could to alert the others sitting up front in the car.
But Alexa didn’t get to admire his acting skills for very long.
As soon as the gunshot went off, the car appeared to skid from one side to the other before it swerved off to the side of the road and came to a complete stop.
Clearly still in some serious pain, Lanzo glanced up at Alexa one last time as he breathed through his teeth which were still gritted together.
And with one final nod of approval, she knew what needed to be done.
Lifting the gun up and held firmly between both her hands, Alexa had it aimed at the passenger door just as it clicked open.
All of her previous training alongside Nicola was about to pay off!
The driver ducked his head down to see inside the backseat just in time to come face to face with the end of Alexa’s raised gun.
‘BANG!’
She fired a single shot off, hitting the man square between the eyes and causing him to fall down dead within an instance.
Astonished by her precise shot, Lanzo couldn’t help but appear amazed as he looked at her still holding the gun in her hands.
But their moment was short lived as the opposite backseat door was quickly ripped open a second later, revealing the Russian who had been traveling with them in the front passenger seat.
And unlike the driver, he already had his gun out ready to fire!
Before he got the chance to use it though, Alexa had already repositioned herself, aimed and fired off another shot.
‘BANG!’
This one had also hit the man in his head and sent him falling backwards from the force of it.
His gun was still firmly grasped in his lifeless hand as he hit the ground below with a ‘thud’.
“Holy s**t!”
Lanzo cried out in astonishment, glancing from one of the dead kidnappers to the next in disbelief.
He was impressed!
Alexa in the meantime worked quickly to climb out of the backseat and instead back into the front, sitting herself behind the steering wheel.
Within a matter of seconds they were off yet again, this time with Alexa herself at the wheel and with an injured Lanzo sitting in the back cradling his leg.
The wheels squealed as the SUV sped away leaving both dead henchmen lying on their backs on the side of the road.
The only thing on Alexa’s mind right now was finding somewhere that they could lay low and try to contact Dante.
That and finding Lanzo some medical treatment fast!
